I just finished playing all that I can out of vanilla Medieval II, but still want to continue the game. Is Stainless different enough from basic version, or should I just go buy Kingdoms? Also, I have never modded before, so this is all new to me.

Yeah 5.1 rocks it adds so much to vanilla and the kingdom campaigns arent that bad neither.
Yeah, as the other two have said. Get Kingdoms and then install SS 5.1. You can still play all the Kingdom campaigns with SS installed.
If you install SS, does this interfere with the vanilla game? That is, after installing SS, I wanted to play the vanilla game, could I without uninstalling SS?
And does SS add anything to the Kingdoms campaign or is it only for the main campaign?
No, like most mods it does not, so yes, you could play vanilla if you wanted. And, no, it doesn't add anything to the Kingdoms campaigns, it's only for the main campaign.
If you choose not to purchase Kingdoms, you can install SS 4.1 and try it out. SS 5.1 is for Kingdoms and will not work with out but 4.1 is for Vanilla Medieval II with 1.2 Patch.
I bought Kingdoms just to be able to play SS 5.0+.
I spent like 15-20 minutes in each campaign of Kingdoms just to see what I paid for... but quickly got tired of vanilla maps, vanilla AI, vanilla units, vanilla factions and so on. I was sick while forced to play without Real Combat, BYG's Supply and Command and all other goodies SS has included...
Seriously, SS is like M3TW...
What features does SS provide for the game?
The whole world is in chess. Any move can be the death of you.

Its seriously like a whole new game. I'm a seasoned player of the vanilla campaign, but you'll never see me go back to it after I discovered SS.
