On the 2nd January 2008, one of English literature's greats passed away, leaving a highly acclaimed adventure series and several screenplays.
The series mentioned above concerned Harry Flashman, the man who bullied Tom Brown in the novel by Thomas Hughes and whose only talents were horse riding, languages and fornication. Fraser acted as an editor to the recently discovered 'historical' papers of Flashman, and published them with endnotes to everything of interest, adding to the realism of the novels and helping to capture the imagination of every young boy and his father. The subject matter of the series concerned Flashman's expulsion from Rugby, to the First Anglo-Afghan War, the West African slave trade, the Indian Mutiny and the defence of Rorke's Drift during the short Anglo-Zulu War. Throughout all this, Flashman's cowardice in the face of battle, makes for a comedic personality trait, as he instinctually flees from danger at first sight.
George MacDonald Fraser also wrote or co-wrote the screenplays for such popular films as The Three Musketeers (1973) and Octopussy (1983). He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1999.
