Default LAN issue, no response from host

Hello ive just installed Medieval II Total War on 3 computers at my home and me, my father and my brother were gonna play some multiplayer via LAN. We are all sitting in the same home network behind a router.

So we all got into the lobby and first we coulnt see each other so we turned our firewalls of. Then when we finally see each other, all cant join. There were always one of us who got the message "No response from host" depending on who created.

Hope i can get a solution on this problem.
    thanks.

Do you have anything special on your router? Password, using a third party software for network management, etc? Have you tried gaming with different programs, and will they work?

You sound very technically competent, and I'm no expert on the subject.

I googled "Medieval II no response from host" and got a bunch of results, one of them might help. Also, you might want to see this thread if you're using Vista.

forgot to say but all computers are running xp and yeah other games work with even 4 computers. (example: warcraft 3, company of heroes, steam)
We have just bought a new router and i can open ports on it, and see if that solves the problem.
i tried google it before but didnt really found anything else but some vista question about it, but well ill check it out again.

edit: googled it again and all of those posts is from the vista guy, and seems like he doesnt even get a solution.
