You will have very high papal standing, along with your allies. Your enemies get a low papal standing. So getting your enemies excommunicated becomes easier.

will you be able to get away with things like attack a non-excommunicated faction?

No, the pope still won't like it when you do and you will eventually get a mission to cease hostilities. It doesn't always work out as planned, when a new pope comes to power all factions are reconciled and if they behave themselves, their papal standing will rise. That can be a bit annoying if that was your enemy, I've had that happen to Norway and the HRE in an English campaign.

Since you are one of the factions that supported the new pope your papal standing will be perfect. After that your standing will work just as if he where a normal pope. You cannot control him. One benefit is that he dislikes your enemies when they voted for an other guy.
Officer to a soldier who refuses to fight: There three types of soldiers who don't have to fight. They are called KIA, MIA and POW and you are not one of them.

    Tosa will be missed.
