Thread: Rome Mod Questions & Recommendations

  1. #241

Default Re: Need Mod Recommendations? Ask Away Here

I'm looking for a very rich and deep single player experience, and one that preferably presents a good Carthage campaign.

I'm thinking Europa Barbarorum, what do those who have played think? is the AI increased? I also love the concept of being able to recruit certain units in certain areas

RS 2.0 previews do look amazing. But if you want a currently out mod, I'd have to say either RS 1.5 or XGM.

In terms of Skins and graphics:- RS,EB, SPQR,TE,Casus Belli, RTR, BBW.

Campaign wise:- RS, SPQR, EB, Casus Belli despite it being in italian, XGM,Res Belicae, TE,RTR, Imperator, BBW, Darth mod,Goth's BI Mod etc

Trait wise:- EB, XGM, BBW, SPQR and Res Belicae etc

gameplay:- SPQR, RS, BBW, Casus Belli, XGM, TE, Darth mod, Goth's BI mod.

these choices are to my taste, however it is hard to pick which one of these mods or more is the best, because they're too many to choose from that all have different features suited the gamers taste.

Wow - so much to read and sooooo many different recommendations - which to choose?

So I like vanilla RTW and am looking at a new mod to spice up the game. I don't really want to add any nerfs or inaccurate troop types/factions and don't want to have to engage in a grind fest right from the get go (although playing RTW vanilla on VH as Selcuoid or Germany is pretty close to it lol).

    I'm looking for:

    - Historical accuracy (I still want the game to be fun though)
    - Great AI (I'm tired of chariots and horses charging my hoplites front on inside cities - I place phalanxes at narrow hard points and watch the slaughter - wish the AI would stand off and use missles rather then send in charging peasants and horses - so stupid, but at least I'm unbeatable - the AI gets so frustrated it brings in 2 stacks with elephants no less lol)
    - Accurate skins (if Spartans didn't wear armor, pls don't give them to me)
    - Balanced (I don't need to play as a dominating powerhouse that uses might and no diplomacy)
    - Great diplomacy (If your my ally, why do you spend all your time trying to bribe my generals?)

Well - that's my wish list. I'm betting it will be either RTR or EB - but I'm open to being steered in the right direction here and would appreicate it!

    THANK YOU!

There are many great mods out there. Quite a few of them are visually breathtaking and so I have listed some of my favourite mods:
I'd say EB has overwhelming visual quality. Everything is pretty good looking and original in its implementation. The campaign map is a huge step up from vanilla and every unit has been skinned with attention to historical details.

However, if you are looking for an even better mod, I'd say the upcoming RS.2 makes other mods look like pansies. The textures on the units are....just super. You should check out the previews here
The best is yet to come. They haven't done Roman preview yet so expect greatness. My favourite factions at this point are probably Armenia, Pontus and Parthia.

Another great mod is Rise of Persia. It's the only mod with Babylonians, Lydians and realistically depicted achaemenid Persians. The mod also has Spartans, Athenians and Egyptians. They are releasing 2.2 in the near future.
You just have to see the sight of persian arstibara fighting with spartan hippeis, and babylonian chariots crushing lydian hoplites while arrows and javelins blot out the sun <3

I think the closest fit would be XGM.
It removes and fantasy units (dogs, screeching women) to enhance hitorical accuracy, has a unified Rome, but doesn't take the history far enough to hamper gameplay. I think the one fantasy unit may be the Spartan Royal Guard, and only because its out of place in time. But it wouldn't be XGM without its uber-ness.
For AI, XGM adds Darth Formations, which I think is the best you can get battle AI-wise. The campaign AI has been tweaked a lot to provide a harder challenge, particularly when facing Carthage or Rome.
For diplomacy, XGM is definitely the best one IMO. Diplomacy is largely hardcoded, but XGM adds force diplomacy, forcing the AI to accept any deal you offer, if you enable it in the diplomacy menu (so you can play with it off as well). Obviously you have to use house rules, and only offer balanced or generous offers to the AI, but it is very useful when the AI is being stuck up. ie: a faction has a couple cities and is crippled; you could kill them in two turns, but you could also make them a protectorate and spare them with force diplomacy. Also, you can force a faction to accept a ceasefire if you know you will crush them.
