    Default Knights Unit sizes

so i've only just started noticing something- on normal unit size settings, te number of knights in a standard unit in M2:TW is 40, but all the unit sizes for knights in kingdoms are 30!
is thre any reason for this decrease in numbers?
cuz i kinda like the mass cavalry charge. or is it to show how 'elite' they are?
even so, say u take a danish/kalmar union unit of chivalric knights. back in M2:TW u got 40 knights in a unit, but in kingdoms:Teutonic, u only get 30 knights!
    pls somebody, wats going on?

Apparently they're just balance tweaks in the campaigns. I think it varies with every campaign because, if I'm not mistaken, Apache and Chichimec cavalry units in the Americas campaign get 40 soldiers per unit.

Each kingdoms campaign is balanced for ITSELF only, making it difficult to compare them. HOWEVER, in Kingdoms ALL cavalry units (except bodyguards) were reduced in number by 25% but their mass was increased to make charges more devastating and controlling them easier.

    i dunno
i'd rather the 40, rather than the 30. safety in numbas y'know
plus more surface area bang for ur buck during massed cavalry charges, and less chance of getting flanked

Yup. The cavalry was way overpowered in the regular game.

Towards the end, I just spammed chivalric and fuedal knights. All my armies consisted of just heavy cavalry. It was fun and awesome though seeing the enemy rout after the 3rd or 4th charge.

Personally I hate the idea of the large sized bodyguard units. I like to cut them down to about 10-15 guards for the general.

Stops you from just using him as another element of cavalry.

in Rome:TW it made sense if a general had high influence, he'd get more bodyguards, but u dont see that in M2:TW.
10-15 would be pretty low for a bodyguard so that'd mean the bodyguards would have to be superelite; else it'd defeat the whole purpose of bodyguards
i mean, when i originally played M2:TW i was a bit peeved cuz of the already diminished knight unit sizes, going from the 54 of a praetorian cavalry unit to 40 for standard knights, and now the 30!!
is this supposed to reflect reality as well as balance in the game? were knights that elite that mounted knights were a rarity??

I've seen the body guard count go up for higher level generals in Medieval 2. So I know that still happens.

The reason I don't like it is that they're a real tank in the early stages of the games (not so much in Kingdoms where teams and territories are already well established) and I think it's a bit unfair to have such a powerful unit so early.

Are you playing on Huge unit sizes? I remember standard Med2 as having 80 knights per unit and then kingdoms has reduced that to 60.

nah i always play normal size settings
the thing is, knights take enoguh casualties as it is in melee after the initial charge; attempting to extricate a knight unit out of a melee to deliver another charge causes more casualties...
i dunno how things are gonna be in kingdoms when i take jerusalem's armies. hmmmm, and i hate gyppo cavalry archers with a passion

Should play on Huge, assuming your computer can handle it?

That my good friend is why I haven't played the Crusades yet either =P
Would have been interesting if they did a lot more of the smaller campaigns like the 100 years war in France or the Reconquista.

    i would LIKE a reconquista
personally i put my settings on low to get the huge unit settings. i just like to have very big armies

i would love a 100 yrs' war expansion of M2:TW.
it was a particularly bloody and protracted war seeing such such momentous events such as the black death and the end of the age of chivalry at Crecy.
plus factions to consider in it: England, France, Scotland, the low countries, u can even consider including some germanic factions that took part in this war, like a horde unit

Personally for the sake of balance and realism I prefer smaller sized units of Knights. But if you want to know a little trick, start your campaign as normal then right when you've got enough cash to churn out some elite units save the game and change the unit size to huge, then pump out your elites and then save and change back to default sizes reload your campaign and have fun
