    Default Article on the evolution of hoplites

    I found this article on the development of hoplites and thureophoroi quite interesting. Here's a quick summary (that misses a lot of the minor points).

    Summary of part one:
    He's basically arguing that the Iphikratean reforms involved marine hoplites rather than land-based ones.

    Summary of part two:
    Here, he claims that Philip probably trained most of his troops to act as both phalangites and spearmen/javelinmen, their actual role in combat depending on the terrain. He also argues that most of the Greek mercs of our era were probably thureophoroi rather than hoplites.
