One player hotseat games.
I just started a campaign with three factions to see how that would go.
For this one I am aiming for a perfect alliance, one where I can get millitairy acces and dont have to worry about being backstabbed.
For this campaign I have chosen an alliance between three probably unlikely allies, I didnt want them to limit each other's expansion though and they will conquer provinces for each other sometimes as well.
The Alliance consists of the Holy Roman Empire, Scotland and Milan.
The Holy Roman Empire will first aim to secure all german provinces, Milan will do its best to secure the Italian provinces, and Scotland will try to conquer the british isles.
After that they might go on combined crusades, fight any enemies of the alliance and perhaps aid each other with money as well.
Milan will secure a powerfull trade position, Scotland will aid its allies with naval invasions once the british isles are secured, and the Holy Roman Empire will field powerfull armies and will be tasked with the most important millitairy matters.

Re: One player hotseat games.
If I played the hotseat campaign only by myself, I would never chose neighbouring factions... But that's your game! I'm running a multiplayer hotseat game now, although it's only first turn now - still need to see how it turns out after some time will pass.

I kept them not too far away from each other so that they can help each other. They all aim for different directions with expansion. I think Scotland might try to conquer Norway and Denmark later on, and the HRE could go for france, and Milan could take on the moors.

By the time we wait for Hungarian player in our Hotseat, I do the 2 player hotseat game... England VS France. Should be much faster.

I choose factions that could get along with eachother. Like Novgorod and Keiv.

You guys inspired me. I'll take Moors, Seljuks, Lithuania and try to get rid of any sign of christianity in the whole world. :-)
You think three factions is enough to do this on VH/VH or should I take Egypt too?

Moors, Seljuks and Egypt would seem like a strong Muslim alliance, they might not get along with Lithuania.
You are nicely spread out with the factions you have chosen though, the moors could first take spain and move up, Lithuania can take the north and the turks could take on the byzantines and work from there.
If you arent controlling egypt I would suggest to make an alliance with them though, and if they betray you, the moors could send some troops to kick their ass.
