Default How does boiling oil work?

I have played Kingdoms for some time now, and have recently discovered that the enemy uses boiling oil, and that they can keep pouring it down over my men!
My question is then this, is it possible to use boiling oil yourself when you defend your settlements, and how does it work?

A quick extra question, how on earth do I build moats? Is that only in the "Brittania campaign" or what?
    Under the Patronage of deRougemont.

    1. For use boiling oil you need to have setlement or fort with stone walls and than position unit on wall close to gatehouse (that mean you have soldiers in gatehouse and that is indicated with flag on gatehouse, same flag like on tower). If you see flag on gatehouse when enemy come on your gate you will pour oil on tham.
    2. You cant build moats, its hardcored for Britania Campaign.

Oil is in all of the campaigns, when you are defending make sure to keep the gatehouse within your possession to use it, it can mean the difference between victory and defeat. You must have a minor city or above, or a castle or above, or a stone fort (in the Britannia Campaign only)

Thats why you should use your artillery to destroy the gatehouse

The basic idea is the same, enemy troops march through the gatehouse and get hit with boiling oil. The differences are that it only gets poured if a defending unit is near the gatehouse (and the gatehouse is not destroyed). The attacker also can't take over the gatehouse (and other towers) anymore like in Rome.
