    If anyone's been following us so far, and wanting to get their hands on what's working for now, here's the Mali Mod build I currently have.

    It may be useful for you, Caledonian, since it is everything that makes your mod work on a foreign computer (mine)!

    It has Caledonian's armor upgrade fix and the banner fix. It also includes Social_Infidel's .cfg and batch files (modified slightly).

    Edit: Also, after messing around a bit, I changed the Mali faction's Norman English accent into an Arabic one. All strat map units, generals, and agents now have Middle Eastern/Moorish voices, and all infantry, siege crew, and General's Bodyguard and Ghanian Tribal Gunners have close matches with Arabic voices.

    Strangely, however, I cannot get Farin, Ghanian Cavalry, or Ghanian Tribal Cavalry to have an accent, either Norman or Arabic. I also cannot find the 'Farin' unit in the battle_models.db file...

    Simply extract the data folder in this .rar into the Mali_Mod folder and choose yes to replace all.


    Also, just for practice, I included the missing data\world\maps\base folder, complete with new Grand Campaign map previews, such as:

    I even managed to make short/long campaign victory condition maps, for that full immersion effect... visible for any faction you play, not just Mali.




    Caledonian, the map files I edited are in the Mali_Mod\data\world\maps\base folder. Think of them as a late Christmas gift.

    Hahah, well that's how it is in the descr_strat. Made my job easier, as I didn't have to photoshop that knife to a new province.

    Thanks Sher Khan, those maps look great.

    I think Farin will not have an entry in the modeldb file, as I think they use the me_bodyguard soldier. I just gave them a different horse and stats in EDU.

    EDIT: Also I notice in your pic the Mali General is green like a Turkish general. But I made them blue in my campaign, I will look into this.

    Also Sher, if you are having a go at the mod could you just say if anything is missing? I think I may have missed some files such as unique skins for spies, diplomats etc. Things like that...

    All my units have Arabic accents in-game.

    EDIT: I've tacked some of the issues on my list. The following are now sorted:

    Ghanian Gunners have unit_info pic
    Ghanian Tribal Gunners now appear when they have armour upgrade
    Generals and Captains have proper Mali colours on battlemap
    battlemap banners now have proper wooden poles

    Custom battles are fine, I can play them easily enough.

    But anytime I try and start a new Grand Campaign, the loading bar goes all the way to completion, but then the game just sits still, forever loading, forever spinning the hourglass at me.

    Then it CTDs after a while.


    I thought it might be Gao, so I moved him a bit, but nothing's changed.

    I'm gonna get the old build and slowly revert one by one until I find what works.


    Edit: Found the issue. The models_strat folder you gave me is the cause of the crash, I'm sure, as removing only the new symbol_normans.cas and the #banner_symbol_normans.tga.dds from my original folder fixes my build back to a stable state.

    Hmmm... not sure why that is. Works in game for me, but the flag looks like the Turks.

    Hold on a sec and I'll upload some pics of the new settlements...

    EDIT: OK heres the pics:

    For me, whenever I have an empty settlement, it shows the Kingdom of Jerusalem flag.


    I'm guessing the problem with the models_strat folder is the symbol_normans.cas file, as the banner symbol file looks perfectly fine to me.

    Kingdom of Jerusalem? Are you playing with a modded game or with Kingdoms, maybe that is causing the problem.

    The empty settlement flag is set in descr_sm_factions. I think I sent it with those editied files, did you replace the old one?

    EDIT: Also check out Portugal in that last screen. Migrate to western France and then conquer Wales?

    Here's me worrying about realistic expansion for Mali, when CA set Portugal on a northern migration...

    Lol, they always do that if either Ireland or Wales is unconquered by turn 50.


    No, I'm loading the game through medieval2.exe, so it shouldn't be an issue.

    I'm taking a look at FACTION_LOGO_YORKSHIRE at the moment.


    I'm using the descr_sm_factions.txt you sent, but not the models_strat files you sent me (I have CTD issue with that folder)

    Well you had the FACTION_LOGO_YORKSHIRE in the earlier versions, and it worked OK. It must be to do with the emtpy settlement flag.

    BTW do you think those 4 new settlements will be enough? They seem to prompt Mali out of its sandy shell. The three rebel settlements are designed to lead west, north, and east, while the Gao settlement adds financial power.

    Yes that would be a good idea, just to prevent the player shooting off eastwards. Or should we be more ambitious and make it Cordoba, since if was by far the biggest city in its area at the time? Force the player into some Christian conflicts in Iberia...

    I suppose the new settlements will make the faction maps a bit redundant now though. At least they are still there for anyone playing the current version.

    BTW, could you do a quick sweep over the mod, just to tell me anything else that need to be done. Any missing ui, skins, things like that.

    The symbol_normans.cas in the models_strat folder gives me a game freeze followed by a CTD. I don't know why, and I haven't started learning how to deal with animations...

    Because of that, my campaign unit models are all Turkish, and I suspect this also causes my empty settlements to have the wrong banner.


    Also, my Farin, Ghanian Cavalry, and Ghanian Tribal Cavalry do not have any voices in battle when clicked on or ordered to move/attack.


    These are my only problems from what I can see.



    Edit: If I can have that new map (and if you don't plan any more additions to it) I can go back and make some new faction maps.

    I think the map is fine, I've let the AI play a bit and Mali seems to do well , its well balanced between Mali and the Moors, Taghaza tends to flick between each.

    EDIT: @Drtad - Thanks for that info. I suppose the 'Mandinka' units are any of the ones that don't have 'Ghanian' in front of them, such as the Farin or the militia units. My idea was that the Mali faction, since if didn't really exist in 1080, would be represented on the battlefield by the militia units, the idea being Mali was a collection of city states. Meanwhile, the Ghanian troops are recuited in the castle buildings, representing subject peoples, such as at Koumbe Saleh, which IIRC had just been taken by the Moors, although I didn't show that ingame as I don't want to directly edit vanilla factions and they never held onto it for long anyway.
