    Default Installing processor

after reading Aedile's GREAT stickied thread about installation, i'm still a little bit confused.
so far from what i understand, is it...

    heatsink/fan
    |
    V
    thermal compound/heat pad
    |
    V
    processor
    |
    V
    mobo

in all honesty, it does seem like a dumb question from someone who's built 2 PC's before, and i wont dare tell you what i did with the last one. but please help me out?

    You got it.
Put the processor in the socket, by lifting a lever on the socket, dropping the processor in (the right way around, check the pattern of the pins at the corners) and clipping the lever down (ensure the processor is flat in the socket..).
Apply the thermal compound according to instructions unless you use the thermal pad on the heatsink (don't use both).
Attach the heatsink. I won't even attempt to say here, as there are many socket styles, and a few variations on fixing them to the mobo. Again just follow the instructions - with luck it won't require you removing the mobo to fix a backplate on!

Come on, you can tell us.. It can't be much worse than some of my overclocking adventures - or the powercut that timed itself perfectly for a bios update (Noooooooo!!!!)

haha its minor compared to your experiences i bet, i just happened to use a thermal compound ON a heat pad and just rammed it all in there together. its the processor im running right now, seems to be ok though.. the instructions were awesome. ¬_¬ was several months ago btw.

Haha, cool. I was always advised against it, as each type uses a different method to conduct the heat, and they may not be compatible (so do not operate as efficiently as either would on it's own (there are metallic compounds, ceramic compounds etc etc..). But, if it works for you I wouldn't worry about it! I tend to overclock and tinker with my desktop builds, so I'm always after that extra degree cooler.. I leave my workstation alone though - no way am I going to void the warranty on that thing!

Yeah, Silver 5 is probably the best you can get (Did you hear that Arctic Silver? I want my royalties!!). Use an alcohol cleaner to remove any heatpad on the block (or residue from previous thermal solution if replacing one).

haha. Can't argue with logic (well, you can, but....). I like to support the underdog, and will argue their case - but as soon as you spend more than £100 your money is better used on Intel with no exceptions.... (I have a collection of AMD desktop machines from the 800 'Thunderbird' right up to this 6400+ BE. My new workstation is Xeon powered.)

When the processor is already in the socket and you're bringing the lever down, locking it into place, it's suppose to give you resistance right? I just want to be sure I wasn't bending the socket pins.

Yes, a fair bit of pressure as well, as long as it's level and oriented the correct way no worries.

most usual now are am2 sockets

be extremely carefull for pins , they curve easily i had many problems with that and motherboard doesn accepts it if every pin is not on its place

I have the 775 socket. I removed the CPU since it's going to be a few days until I get the new PSU and so I checked the pins and they were all straight.

Question on the thermal compound/grease, since I removed the CPU and heatsink and placed it back with it's protective cover in the box, when I get around to installing it again, do I need to add more thermal material?

Personally I would clean what's on it off with some isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol), let it dry completely and apply new. They have some cleaners out there specifically designed for cleaning the compound off but they aren't necessary.

I already bought the Arctic Silver CMQ-22G thermal compound and thermal material Remover & Surface Purifier off Newegg. They were cheap but the shipping price was ridiculous for items so small.

Yeah Newegg doesn't cut any discounts on shipping for smaller items. Zipzoomfly has free shipping on most of their items but they have no where near the selection.
