Lynch changed things which were essential to the story, for no apparent reason. So we ended up with silliness like "weirding modules" and more. Weirding modules? It might have helped, I suppose, if Lynch hadn't been on drugs when he made the movie. Or if someone, anyone, involved with the movie had put down the drugs long enough to actually read the book.
The Sci-Fi Channel mini-series was less egregious than Lynch's abomination, but still contained outrageous things which were made up entirely in the imagination of the director and screenwriter and had nothing at all to do with Herbert's books. There was a scene with Paul standing on the balcony of some ridiculous temple-like structure and water started gushing out around his feet. Ridiculous and not at all related to anything in the book. The first thing which popped into my mind when I saw that was, "Wow, that's quite a bladder control problem there, Paul. Buy some Depends!" And thus, the mini-series was ruined for me. There were other things too, such as the silliness with a romance between Paul and Irulan in the beginning, which contradicted a whole range of things in the book.
For special effects and such, both movies have some good points. But it would be nice, just once, if a director was a fan of the book before making it, enough so to remain true to the details. Even Peter Jackson managed to make up wildly out-of-place things in the Lord of the Rings movies. Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen, for no reason other than to give Liv Tyler more screen time and other things.
Just once, I'd like to see a movie based on a book which didn't change the book. Probably never happen. Writers and directors like to think they are more creative than the author of the book itself, and seek to "improve" the work with their own cleverness. And it rarely works, although Jackson has some the closest to date.

Other people have other tastes. And the above rant is not meant in any way to demean the tastes of others. It is just my personal opinion on the movies made so far from the book.
