I like the Dune series of novels and the movie/mini-series adaptations as well so this, for me, is good news. I hope it turns out great and I cant wait to see this.

Its going to be directed by Peter Berg, the guy who recently did the film The Kingdom

As a lover of sci-fi, I am hoping this film is done well. I like Lynch's Dune a lot. I've never read any of the books, I hear they are great, but hopefully this will actually be a good movie and not just an average Hollywood production. How was The Kingdom? From the trailers it didn't look that great.

Now that they know people will sit through three hours of film, senseless cliffhanger 'endings' and modern writers' adaptations and 'improvements' on classics of literature, I'm not surprised.

I'm not exactly joyful, either, but there's always hope. I expect two episodic movies covering Dune at the least.

    Edit:

Lord Rahl, it's a punishment to yourself to not read Dune. Get over to a bookstore and get it. You won't regret it. Probably.

I've been meaning to read the books, but I just get caught reading everything else instead.

Hopefully Sting and Patrick Stewart will be in the new Dune. Oh, and that dude with the awesome voice! The guy who says, "Mua'Dib", very low and slow. Awesome voice.

Dune, again? I think the 2 existing versions are admirable (mini-series being that bit closer to the books, but it has 3 films in which to tell the story).
I would have hoped for maybe the House Atreides/Harkonnen/Corrino Prequels, or maybe the Butlerian Jihad.
I guess the Butlerian Jihad is quite similar to current movie sci-fi, covering similar notions to AI and the Matrix.

God no! all the prequels were TERRIBLE. I hope people stay away from those (they should be burned!). I want to see a thought provoking God Emperor *cough*fav book of all time*cough* or worst case I suppose Chapterhouse or Heretics. But definitely not the prequels. Brian Herbert raped the Dune series with those books.

I'm in agreement with you. I bought one of those prequels, I think the first, knowing that it would be good, because his son found the unfinished works of his father ala Tolkien.

Of course, that was just an idea I had in my head. The novel thoroughly sucked and I vowed to never even skim through a second one.

I have to say that I prefer the original Dune to any of the sequels, however. God Emperor was great, but Heretics was a bit of a let down for me. I never even got around to finishing reading it.

Very good - I was a huge fan of the movie (starring Sting among other big names). The mini-series were pretty good too, but not as stylish as the movie.

By the way, The Kingdom was a good movie (hampered by unnecessary camera-shaking).

    Roy+Goat:
I quite liked them. I've even read 'Butlerian Jihad' a few times, and the first of the house prequels twice. Different strokes for different folks, I suppose. Maybe give them another try - but do not hold them against the original, they are just placed in the same universe. Yes, it's not as good as Dune, but I think they would make a better movie adaptation. There are many worse books that have become films - even ones that try to express ideas very hard to capture on film.

DUNE ?! I don't know anything about the moive Dune or its book ,But I've played DuneII and Dune 2000 made by Westwood and actually Dune2 was the first real RTS game I played and it introduced me to the world of Strategy games (Along with WarcraftII) I still love the game and hope Westwood make the new version of this game after successful return to C&C series.

    /rant on

David Lynch's movie version of Dune was the first time I ever walked out of a movie in disgust. Perhaps it is because I read the books and loved the books, and apparently Lynch did neither. I could not sit through the trashing of such a great novel.

Lynch changed things which were essential to the story, for no apparent reason. So we ended up with silliness like "weirding modules" and more. Weirding modules? It might have helped, I suppose, if Lynch hadn't been on drugs when he made the movie. Or if someone, anyone, involved with the movie had put down the drugs long enough to actually read the book.

The Sci-Fi Channel mini-series was less egregious than Lynch's abomination, but still contained outrageous things which were made up entirely in the imagination of the director and screenwriter and had nothing at all to do with Herbert's books. There was a scene with Paul standing on the balcony of some ridiculous temple-like structure and water started gushing out around his feet. Ridiculous and not at all related to anything in the book. The first thing which popped into my mind when I saw that was, "Wow, that's quite a bladder control problem there, Paul. Buy some Depends!" And thus, the mini-series was ruined for me. There were other things too, such as the silliness with a romance between Paul and Irulan in the beginning, which contradicted a whole range of things in the book.

For special effects and such, both movies have some good points. But it would be nice, just once, if a director was a fan of the book before making it, enough so to remain true to the details. Even Peter Jackson managed to make up wildly out-of-place things in the Lord of the Rings movies. Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen, for no reason other than to give Liv Tyler more screen time and other things.

Just once, I'd like to see a movie based on a book which didn't change the book. Probably never happen. Writers and directors like to think they are more creative than the author of the book itself, and seek to "improve" the work with their own cleverness. And it rarely works, although Jackson has some the closest to date.

    /rant off

Other people have other tastes. And the above rant is not meant in any way to demean the tastes of others. It is just my personal opinion on the movies made so far from the book.
