Yeah, interesting post, Reno Melitenses, i would also like to hear more about your efforts to keep the Roman Empire afloat. By the way, do you auto-manage your cities or do you manage them yourself? 85 is a lot of cities to manage individually.

I always think the challenge is to manage your cities yourself. This does make it slower per turn but also more challenging. If you play this way, then you need governors to manage, and of course not every city has a govenor at the start of the campaign. Of course, you can recruit generals/governors in certain cities throughout the empire to assist in the management of the empire. These Governors are not designed to lead great armies into battle, though of course you can if you want to, but there morale status is not as good as family members. The unit used for the governors is the Equites Stablesiani.

Reno is right, the economy of the empire is potentially large if you build it properly, but you will go backwards for a while.

So, you need to look after your existing troops and manage them carefully, especially your Palatine troops until you have enough cash to recruit more.
As some have noticed the Franks are a hard nut to crack in battle, as are the Izyges and of course the Sassanids, but hey, it's about the challenge. Coupled with this of course is the potential rebellion of cities and generals disloyal to Julianus.

All in all an interesting and challenging campaign.
Now just wait till IJV3.0, when there will be the Gupta Indians as a new faction armed with deadly longbow infantry and elephants, even armoured elephants!!

I always manage my cities. Able governors are send to large cities, like Roma, Constantinople, and all those cities that can yield a heavy income. The east is more wealthy than the west, so first priority is to strengthen the western economy. Some cities, especially those in Gaul, Avaricum the worst, have problems with over population that can result in uprising. To solve problem, easy. I recruit either Auxilla or Numeri and disband them in other cities with a low population on the Rhine. Disloyal generals are send to critical localities, and or send with family members or loyal characters to war. One of them is the governor of Edessa, being almost every turn besieged, he keeps him self busy, and earned quite a few titles.

In the meantime the legions captured Petra, now its Palmyra next to fall, as the Lackhmids are using it to launch assaults against Roman lands. I will keep you informed, as you liked to hear my tale.

One question for julianus heraclius, I guess that IJ v3 will be save compatible with v2, but will the Gupta appear or we have to begin a new campaign.

    Cheers.

Because I'm adding a new faction and so altering the strat.txt file V3.0 will not be compatible with V2.01a. I know this may be unfortunate but V3.0 is greatly enhanced with a new faction to challenge the Sassanids as well as new buldings such as:

Multiple religious worship (Christian, Arian Christian, Jewish, Manicheism, Pagan, NeoPlatonic, Mithraism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Hinduism). Most of these religions will be available in cities, and of course will cause unrest, but that was the nature of the 4th C.

Also buildings such as theatres, healing centres, road-side inns, specialist buildings such as the Pantheon of Rome, theatres of Pompey and Marcullus in Rome, new Curia's for Rome and Constantinople plus more.

This I hope will create a richer environment that was the 4th C and make campaigns more interesting. Remember, it just wasn't about battles.

It will have a couple of additional units for the romans, a clibinarii unit for the Arabs, new Parthian Clan clibinarii and Horse Archers for the Sassanids as we as tweaking some Armenian and Sassanid cavalry units. Now there are Savaran with unarmoured horses and a WHOLE new faction, the Indian Guptas which will have armoured elephants, longbowmen, clibinarii etc.

Plus there is a major addition of buildings to IJV3.0 including the ability to build religious buidlings from different religions in the same city. The religions include:

    Christianity
    Arian Christianity
    Judaism
    Manicheism
    Mithraism
    Buddhism
    Hinduism
    NeoPagan (Neo Platonic)
    Zorastrianism
    Paganism

have also added extra traits and ancillaries. So now a roman general can earn the title of Parthicus Max, or Gothicus Max, for example if he is successful against these enemies.

There is also a new map, courtesy of Gaiten and Pompeius Magnus and finally a rejigging of the export_description_unit file with all the atttack and defence points being modified. This work is being done by beatoangelico.

    Hope this wets your appetite.

    Cheers

For those of you who may be interested a few of us got together and attempted to recreate the Batte of Samarra in 363AD. This was the battle where Julian was killed.

Our re-enactment resulted in Julian being successful. Thanks go to SeniorBatavianHorse for organising this event.

Regarding the Gupta, their capital is Pataliputra in east India, so to make them historicly accurate you'll have to stretch to map farther into the east.
Are you really going to do that?

I'm afraid not as it is stretched to the max now. So unfortunately we can only have part of the Gupta Empire. But at least we will have a different faction and one that can at least give the sassanids a headache.

You know, between the sassanids and the Gupta were two other kingdoms: the Indo-Sassanid and the Kidarite, and I think the later one would be better opponent to the then sassanids the Gupta.

Hello JH, I was wondering if its possible by adding a few more "monuments" into the game. I would love to see the "Baths of Carcalla" in Rome; it would help with health and make people happier. Well thats my 2-cents!

    Looking forward to v3.0

    Cordially yours,
    NM

Well in fact, I have added baths and theatres. So there will be the Theatre of Pompey and the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome as well.

I assume that the next version won't be compatible with the current one, am I right? I'm asking because I don't think my current campaign will be completed before the next version is out.

I'm afraid not, as there are major changes. There is a whole new faction, the Guptas for the Romano British, which will give the Sassanids more enemies to deal with, plus the RB's were a non-playable faction anyway and really not part of this timeframe.

You may well have time to finish your campaign as IJV3.0 still has some tweaking to do, then put out a BETA version before the final package hits the streets, so I think you will have some time to "practice" for the next version.

Who knows, you may be the first roman general to invade India!

hey I have a few ideas:

1-why not introduce now voices? instead of english (or some disgraceful version), we can hear them as they actually spoke, like EB. pahlavan, gothic, latin, saxon, Arabic, berber languages and a few others are decently if not very well documented. its up to you all.
