Try not to put your commander into a direct fight... Use him only for running up fleeing enemy and ocassional charges in battle.

Are you sending your generals into thick, bloody melee fighting all the time, or are they starting out with that trait?

And if you win enough battles, especially when the odds are against you, your generals should be gaining traits which increase their command level. Is this not working?

Yup - your general will get bad traits if you autoresolve, as he should... Command the battles yourself and he will get command up!

Yeah, this mod doesn't like autoresolve. Command the battles yourself and you won't get the wounded trait. Fight battles where you are out matched if you want to get command up. I mean, how much do you learn when all you have to do is say "march forward and kill them all"

How balanced are the fights? Are you outnumbered 2 to 1 most of the time? Because that is seemingly the only way to get any command. Or, you could loose only small amounts of troops (>100/battle). Command stars are highly prized by me, and normally appoint 4 star generals to my highest armies.

Hmm, check your general's traits, they like to earn negative traits all the time. Perhaps he loved muslims (-1 command vs muslims) along with a couple others (bad attacker/defender) could modify your command for specific battles.

He can also be alcoholic, or have some dicease... Or low on supply, unit routing, else... Try to settle general in a city for a few turns, he is likely to heal and units will go up morale. You see, there are a lot of temporary traits, such as "units tired", which will lower his morale until he will get some rest...

P.S. And I nevr lead an army with less than five stars in my current campaign... I married my princess to a foreig 8-star general and raised him up, and also the royal family seems to have bonuses.

I don't like the sev wounded thing, and I absolutly hate the autoresolve non-balance. But i've accepted them as challenges and have a good time playing with there, so I understand why many would hate them.

Autoresolve was never balanced and should not be, since not you are controlling the battle... For example, most sieges work pretty well, and I had some success with autoresolving some spear militias vs Spanish skirmishing javelin infantry and cavalry, which I couldn't run up to in regular battle.

I autoresolve when I don't want to waste my time (against rebels, minor towns, ect..)

If you don't like severely wounded, You could do the same thing that I did to the suppily traits. Just remove its effects without removing the trait. That way you don't mess up the game trying to change 1 minor thing.

To be honest, all your family members are destined to be terrible with current traits system. So better focus on making your prince better... I usually have all-cavalry force led by my prince which gets rid of all the rebels across my country and I try to kill with my prince as many foes as possible. Helps.

yeah, sooner or later EVERY general will be a slave to superstition, a drunk, and steal probably half the treasury of whatever city he is stationed in.

I dont even worry with trying to use family members. I dont use governors until I can train generals at castles and then use those.

I groom my prince, leave his brothers unwed and marry off any sisters to either cement alliances or the random bad ass general.

I suppose I approach the family tree more like a horse breeder than a politically inclined patriarch.
