    Default SS rebooting my computer

    This one is really ugly.

Whenever I minimize my game and maximize it again, my computer gets rebooted. It doesn't happen at the beginning of my playing but only after a while.

I tried having some fun with my settings, especially graphics, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

I have top tier drivers and my computer is brand new and has no hardware problems. I can tell that because no other application dares to reboot it.

Did anybody have the same problem? Maybe you know what causes it and how to fix it?

Advice like "dont minimize your game" will not gain you +rep.

My logs only say about missing portraits of heretics (another bug?) but those messages are from my whole game and don't seem to harm it at all. There's no sign of reboot in the log.

After I get to windows, I'm told that my system "recovered after a serious crash". Wonder how it does know that.

I'm running winxp sp2 and it's all up to date. I'm a linux guy, I don't neglect my updates.

What bugs me is that I had no trouble with vanilla, kingdoms, tlr, ltc and older SS version on the very same hardware. And now this. :-(

well I would suggest reinstalling SS if that does not work try reinstalling medieval 2 and kingdoms. If THAT does not work delete you entire Sega folder and deinstal and reinstal! also maybe redownloading?

Ouch. Since there's no better idea around, let's just do it.

I didn't count on much and thus am not disappointed.

I deleted it all and installed again. I went to the menu, hit alt+tab, got back to windows. Hit alt+tab again, got back to the game. Hit alt+tab once more to get to windows and went out of the room for around 5 minutes. After I got back, I tried to get back to SS with alt+tab and my computer rebooted. No trace in logs.

No programs running, even switched off my antivirus.

Can anyone at least try to confirm it doesn't happen only to me? :-)

Does the same thing happen when you play vanilla? I haven't got a clue, but that could define the causes as to either your machine or the game/mod.

Edit: And I've never had my computer reboot while alt+tabbing a lot, although M2TW will crash on occasion when I do.

hi all, i'm new here.....same damned problem for me!!!

the game make my pc reboot veeeery often but only in campaign map...i haven't noticed anything particular in campaign map that can give error like that, it seems not related to any particular item on the map...it just....reboot...in "random mode" .......

happens only with SS....no problem with MTWII kingdoms (i made an entire crusade campaign with no rebooting). i reinstalled ALL (game and SS mod) 2 times but....nothing...

i have an intel core2 duo and ati x1950pro vga (got also the latest certified ati drivers), running on XP media center Sp2....but i don't think it's an hardware problem...

...simply....i don't know what the hell is the problem but it makes me really angry !!!!

here is my system log...maybe someone could help me! thanks a lot!!!

Are you using a completely different GPU/driver set with your new PC compared to the old one?
If your not,(ie) both Nvidia, you could try an older driver version.Assumption: maybe the ones you used prior to geting new hardware?
A two minute driver swap is a hell of a lot less painless than a reinstall.

Alt-tab has always been a grey area and it's rarely supported as a feature by game manafacturers etc as it's not a function of their software.

I'm at work now but i'll test it out on mine tonight when i get home at 8pm.

EDIT: KK is spot on,Newest dosent always mean its the best or most stable.I'd also like to add that in the unfathomable amount of hours i have played SS i have never had a single CTD,bar the known one on the faction select screen.Apart from that - solid as a rock.

    Hi delra & surfersrule,

That's really weird and I have really no idea at the moment what could cause this.
One question: Do you update your Windows daily and do you use always the latest graphics card drivers?
I'm just asking because sometimes the newest software can also cause problems...

EDIT:@surfersrule: unfortuntely, the system.log doesn't show any unusual warnings.

Hi guys. This sounds very much like a harware problem. Something must be overheating. Do a google, there are plenty of programs that will log you hardware temperatures.

Make sure all the fan grills are clear of anything obstructing them.

If everything is fine in that regard, if you know what you are doing, take the side off your tower, and setup a fan to cool, and test again. If it works fine this time, I suggest downloading an older version of your graphic card drivers, like KK says, the newest drivers are probably prototypes, and maybe over extending your GFX cards capabilities.

If this still isn't the problem, then it sounds very much like a worm....try testing with the interenet disconnected, and do a system scan using your AV software in safe mode.

    Hope this helps!

    wow...thanks for advices!!
i have auto updates for XP and....yes, i recently installed latest ati catalyst vga driver set (7.11), but only because with the older ones (6.9) the problem was still there....the strange thing is that i play with many other games and everything is fine, no rebooting...also MTW2 kingdoms works fine...

about vga overheating...never overclocked anything (cpu/vga), but i was considering it too...so i made a little test....the card temp now signs 43 C°....my pc is on since yesterday at 9 in the morning and I also spent last hour playing MADDEN2008 at max res and with all details and effects activated...seems quite low
...maybe my power supply (500W) is not capable of keep my vga up?:hmmm:

about worm warning...i'll check with a global scan and i'll report the results...

last thing....almost every reboot happens when i scroll the campaign map in any directions (with arrow keys or mouse), when i remain on the same part of map it seems stable....strange uh!:hmmm:

I think I figured it out.

It happens only if I have a different resolution in game than on my desktop. Now when both are matching, no problem at all.
