    Default AI is pretty numb

    Hi,

I started a Greek campain on H/H difficulty level and everything is going great so far.

Regardless, I find that the AI is not doing much. They attack me, that's alright, but they don't fight each other, ever.

Everything is more or less the same since it started. Iberian didn't even take full control of spain, neither did gaul of France. No one really expended and it's 256 BC.

I run vanilla RTR 6 gold.

I know it's possible to have dynamic AI (with RTRPE).

If anyone has an idea, thanks in advance.

    Expected answer.

But RTRPE brings more changes that what I want from the game. I like the way RTR works right now aside from the fact that the AI don't do shi*.

Are the landlocks the only thing that makes the AI better or is there a bit of the 1.5 patch in there too?

You can remove the landblocks with an optional add-on. That`s not the issue. The Ai is better in PE because of the RTW v1.5 version. Or the Bi v1.6 if you play it with that exe. Otherwise, they are pretty much the same. Maybe the ai formations and unit stats that have been changed in PE can make another difference, but it`s mainly just a port to a superior/newer version of the game.

    Damnation.
Can't play RTR gold with the 1.5 can I?

Well, I might try PE after I get tired of my greek campain. Thanks.

That`s what PE is supposed to be.... The main reason behind its existence.

The phalanx bug, the changes made to the cavalry and infantry, I heard there has been some changes with the economic system as well.

I play RTR 6 Gold in preference to RTR PE. Believe me the AI does fight each other and doesn't stay put.

I have found that as your empire grows the AI does tend to gang up on you, so beware!

I've played some campaigns where the Iberians take out Gaul, other times they conquer Iberia and then sit behind the mountains.

I've seen Rome expand and take out Gaul and The Germans.

I usually see Thrace expand northwards, at times this includes the Sarmation settlements near them as well.

    Some examples.

    Me playing as Rome - it's 138BC;

    Me playing as Rome (different campaign) - it's 63BC;

    Me playing as Macedon - it's 163BC

Me playing as Macedon (different campaign) - it's 178BC

Ok, the phalanx bug is annoying, I'll grant you that. And there have definitely been some cavalry and infantry tweaks, but I think those have, in general, made it more realistic. What don't you like? If it's realism-related, I can try to fix it in the ExRM. (You'd be under no obligation to play, of course...I'd just want to do it on principle.)

But I don't recall there being any economic changes beyond the 3k/turn gold script, and that's just there 'cause the AI (while better strategically) still stinks at money management. Oh, and I changed grain in the ExRM to the old war dog resource, so you don't get ridiculous growth rates anymore.

In vanilla RTRPE there is no money script. Or any other kind of script for that matter. And the economics have not been changed. Unless you meant that the grain resources were added back or that the other ones that had issues were corrected. Only a few macedonian barracks have new costs because they were too low and helped them become the super powere that they usually are(in RTR).

Oh, ok. I think I remember hearing something about you removing that, now that you mention it. Hmmm, I'd better check to make sure that's not in the ExRM script file.

By switching grain to the war dog resource, did I screw up any of your resource planning? IIRC, all that changed in 1.9 are some changes in the placement of icons and some fixes in which provinces had what resources. I think I successfully integrated all of those, and the war dog thing was a simple find/replace for the most part.

The grain resources were not implemented in RTR 6 Gold. They were put back in RTRPE starting with the v1.8, not v1.9. Basically in previous versions they were not implemented in descr_strat iirc.

It's a very generous offer. Thank you.

But as I said, I think I'll just finish my greek campain and then try RTRPE and see if I enjoy it.

    Thanks again.

Oh, ok. Well, I hope no one misses the war dog units in the ExRM.

Can someone point what files were modified from RTR Gold to RTRPE 1.9?
Fact is, I cant play with this phalanx bug. And is not only with the phalanx, recently I had a unit that was reduced to four soldiers in a battle and they were very apart from each other. I dont remember exactly what unit was, maybe was a bastarnae, but was not with RTR, was with Roma Surrectum. The bug happens with every single mod made for RTW 1.5. I have four mods installed now, and only one, RTR Gold, dont have this problem. Sometimes my archers dont answers my call to retreat, they simply stand still and the enemies came and butcher them. I also saw units walking in the middle of buildings, like they were ghosts. And I cant see where the AI is more smart, I killed a lot of their generals easily because they continue to charge at the front of their troops. I also posted pics of the AI doing nothing during a siege.
But not only these bugs, RTW 1.2 is less graphically intensive, the textures and the sky were more simple, so I can have epic battles with a high quantity of soldiers, grass and anti-aliasing at the same time. Sometime ago I was making a excel sheet for RTR Gold and RTRPE 1.9, collecting data so that I can rebalance it myself. My idea is to put some of the stats from RTRPE 1.9 in RTR Gold.

Hmmm, I disagree about the pros and cons of the 1.5 exe, but I respect your decision. I recommend using a file comparison tool to check out the EDUs of each mod. That way, you can see exactly what changed. N.B.: Disregard changes to cavalry stats, since the charge function in 1.5 isn't bugged like it is in prior versions.

Hmm...I dont known the cavalry charge was bugged in previous patches. Can you give an example on how it fails? At least in Barbarian Invasion (which is version 1.4) the charge from the lancer cavalry was accurate.

I think it's bugged up through v1.3 of RTW. The charge function has some sort of disabling factor (not sure what...I didn't start modding until I began helping with RTR-PE) that meant that the RTR-Gold folks had to give a lot of the cav units charge numbers in the 40-60 range. In RTR-PE you get the same effect or better from charge numbers in the 10-25 range.
