    Default A nation divided.

    I am having a new idea for a challenge but I am not sure about which faction to choose for this.

    I plan to sort of split up a faction as soon as I am able, and send half of it far away to pretty much establish a second kingdom. With this I dont mean a crusade to the holy land but elsewhere, lets say going to spain with Norway or something like that. I want quite some distance in between so that the two parts cant rely on help from the other side.

    For this I will need a faction that can show two faces, to let these two seperate parts really grow apart and develop their own look and tacktics.

    I am open to suggestions but already must say that it cant be Byzantium before anyone brings it up, since a lot of their units pretty much wear the same outfits, making it rather impossible to give both parts a different look.

    The only problem is that most factions with distinct appearances to begin with (Byzantium, the Scandinavian factions, the Russian factions) do have an overarching appearance theme that would be difficult to "separate". And of course, all the other factions pretty much look the same anyway.

    It might be possible to do it with Denmark or Norway--one "half" uses only Norse Swordsmen, Huscarls, Norse Archers, stuff like that, and the other uses only Dismounted Feudal Knights and other "generic" units (peasant archers, Feudal Knights, whatever). I can't think of any other faction that would have a chance at something like this.

    One of the advantages to doing this with a faction that has a very diverse unit roster, like Byzantium, is that you can give each half a very different play style. One might rely heavily on horse archers and cavalry (which the Byzantines certainly are strong in), and the other might rely primarily on infantry (which, again, the Byzantines have some good options in). Sure, they all look basically the same, but at least they look different than everybody else, and they have a solid enough roster over a wide enough spread of unit types that it's feasible.

    I honestly can't think of any other factions that could pull this off, but perhaps some more creative than I will come up with something.

    Cheers.

    The looks is rather important. Both sides dont need to be strong at everything.

    I did this my last campaign as England. My family tree was 4 generations in and has two main branches from my original generals. One kept England while the other sailed to Sicily and set up a new kingdom there, eventually taking North Africa and Iberia.

    It was fun but the "new kingdom" has some stiff distance to capital penalties to deal with.

    You just need a third kingdom between your first two to have your capital.

    Well, you can separate generic units (peasant crossbowmen, spear militias) from the others... =\ Pointless...

    Maybe Sicily or Moors can be divided like Christian/Muslim culture units?

    that might be possible, maybe the moors could be seperated between the desert tribes (wearing the robes) and all others.

    Well, Castille can justifyably take the netherlands and then perhaps hire an army of flemish pikemen to fight there.

    Or you can make it hard on yourself and decide that your second kingdom only can use local mercenaries.

    I have a suggestion. Start a hotseat campaign and play as two different factions on the other side of the map.

    *Warning, Ignorance Alert: I have never played a hotseat campaign.*

    Wouldn't that force you to autoresolve all the battles? Getting to play around with the fun units of a faction is about 80% of the point of playing them.

    Cheers.

    That isn't a very elucidating or helpful response. Anybody else care to take a crack at it?

    I was under the impression that hotseat campaigns required all battles to be autoresolved. Perhaps that only applies to battles between "player countries"? As I said, I have never played a hotseat campaign, so I don't know the ins and outs of it at all. Being able to "configure" it could mean anything from an in-game option at the beginning of the campaign to altering half a dozen files.

    Cheers.

    I've seen a thread on this somewhere in the forums... Just search.

    Go to Multiplaer and select hotseat campaign. It's easy. You can then turn off autoresolve.

    I'm doing it right now as the Novgorod and Kiev. It's great fun!

    This is a quote from my post in the 5.1 released thread.

    to play hotseat is to control more than one faction in a game.
    simply goto multiplayer and select "Hotseat"
    then select the factions you want to control and off you go

    this is great if ya wanna play with a friend.

    also, there is a small problem with the hotseat feature being that you cant cammand a battle in which you are the defender.
    to fix this problem open your Med2 directory.
    you will see a file called "medieval2.preference" open this file and overwrite the "hotseat" section with this

    [hotseat]
    autoresolve_battles = 0
    disable_console = 0
    disable_papal_elections = 0
    save_prefs = 1
    update_ai_camera = 1
    validate_diplomacy = 1
    turns = false
    scroll = false

    hope that helps

    Hmmm I did just noticed that whenever the AI attacks in a seige it auto resolves. But when I attack them it does not.

    Thanks Big Jake
