The Byzantines have taken Rome!

So I was playing a campaign with Sicily and it was may 82nd turn. I see Byzantine ships going around the Italian Peninsula and I thought they were going to attack Sicily. On the next turn I saw this.



I thought, ah, they are screwing themselves because they are already at war with every other catholic nation. At least they were close so I took a pic.

and then the next turn...






I was like, wow, I just found myself a new place to sack..

Well, I decided to let them have it, see how it turns out. And I got lazy lol, they got 2 bishops already at 94% Catholic from 100%.

But damn, the Byzantines are actually doing good, they've taken almost all of Venice's provinces and already touched Milan. They've also got Bishops in the Holy Land, and I doubt they are passing by.

If you play as Byzantium, one of the victory conditions is to capture Rome. I just finished a Byzantium campaign (Kingdoms retrofit) and after the Pope attacked me and I took all three of his cities no crusade was called and my Hungarian allies kept with me until I won the campaign about 5 turns later.

I for one will NEVER call a German a legitimate Roman Emperor. Only Charlemagne made any real attempt at restoring the Roman Empire. The other guys were busy pencil pushing the Pope and their petty dukes and princes.

That be a great explanation, except being Roman had nothing to do with "Roman blood" it was all about holding citizenship in the Roman state (and Byzantium was simply the continuation of Roman Empire in the middle ages).

I am currently playing as byzies, after i take the east i am going to RAM some byzantine power straight up the boot all the way to milan then connect by taking Zagreb, and Ragusa.

The Byzies can be the suprise card when looking at the italian peninsula.

P.S When playing as the byzies always ally with the hungarians it will keep that western flank secure!
