Default The Roman position is very very difficult

Before I restarted as the GCS, as Rome I was virtually gobbled up by a combo of the independent Greeks, Rome rebels and Carthage. The only thing that saved me was hitting the escape key, than exit.

And to me it seems like the independent Greeks have units that they pull out of their ###'s, because their armies are never ending.

When you install the game you can choose to reduce AI bonuses, you may want to try this if you're having a tough time. Never ending stacks is a result of AI bonuses, you can capture the enemy's Capitol which will also significantly reduce their bonuses... .

Hey! I just finished a campaign where I brought the Roman Empire to its greatest extent in real life on H/H, AI bonuses turned on.

Gaul is right, the first stage of the game (prior to you securing Italy) is insanely difficult as Rome with the combo of all those people going for you, and they're pretty much all stronger than you. Once you begin to expand though it becomes a walk in the park because Romans kick ass late game.

You will find most likely that many of us on this board are Republicans and support Bush, I am one.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

I make little connection between a Republican and a Bush Supporter. You gentlemen are free to believe what you will, but the facts and evidence speak for themselves.

America's future is far darker since the events of the last few years. I mean this in more ways then simply the embarrassing turn of the economy....

hmm...playing Roman hard! Hardly! Good use of tactics and terrain should allow you to kill off the Independant Greeks/Carthaginians and Roman Rebels in southern Italy fairly fast.

My best campaign yet is as the romans, I've killed off the Carthies in North Africa and got 60,000+ in the bank. Its something like 253BC. Gauls in the North have just attacked and now face my full stack of double silver chevron veterans (they ain't gonna be happy).

Fix the problem, not the blame!

I keep AI bonuses on for a challenge, and don't mind all that much facing huge armies, so long as I win.

Maybe I should reduce the general difficulty to M/M. (I never play VH)

    I second that motion!!

Gaul: Rome is tough to play with at the begining....darn near impossible!! but to buy yourself some time, put peltast in the 2 towns near were Pyrrhus would likely attack first....he uses the elephants as a battering ram..if you kill those off, his army flees, allowing you some much needed recruiting time...build ports, granaries, and temples that boost the economy so you can buy mercs and/or retrain....lastly, fight on your terms....if enemy outnumbers you in the sense of 2 to 3 stacks to 1, retreat....usually only 1 stack will follow, allowing more favorable results....and remember, sometimes you have to sacrifice a town to save an empire!!! hope this helps.....

Then it'll be locked. 'Modern' Politic discussions are way off topic for here.

i had a tough time with the roman start also. this was the first time i used rome in a couple of releases but it has def got alot harder to take out the IGCS, the rebels, and carthage.

It's interesting how much harder the Roman start is for the player than for the AI. Rome never comes under any pressure by the IGCS when I play campaigns against them.

The AI gets a much easier start - more money, more buildings, more population, more units (many with free upkeep, and more experience).

i just gave it another shot and the igcs took capua and i besieged them the next turn, when they sallied out i decimated them.

If you assault the Romans early on, they can be surprisingly vulnerable. I took Capua and Rome with Hanno's army early in the game.

@DBH - I realize the AI gets more money, etc, even with reduced AI, but it's strange how Phyrrus just sits around Tarentum without ever attacking the Romans.

I killed Phyrrus in a siege; all his troops left him to go siege a town and I took the town he was in with triarii.

    Priceless.
