    1) A

    2) All I know is Richard the Lionhearted = Third, Urban II = First. I can guess that Doge Dandalo was Fourth and Louis VII was Second.

    3) Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Jerusalem, and Antioch.

    4) D.

    5) D. I mean, B.

    6) I don't think I get it...

    7) No idea, and I'm not going to embarrass myself by guessing or disgrace myself by Googling and claiming I know the answer.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
And now, the Google: Cyprus, then Rhodes, then Malta.

    8) E! (no, not the television network)

    Cheers.

    Hey Demo,
I think I remember reading about this, it is D right? The barbarism inflicted primarily by the Christians, especially during the first crusade, is almost unbelievable, even by the standards of the day.
I will refer people to LandWalker's answers for the key-
-(Quick aside to LW, impressed by the score, all the best on your Harvard Apps, cool that you might make your way into this part of the world, think you are ready for the Peoples' Republic of Cambridge?)
...except 8 is a trick question, the correct answer is crocodiles.

I really encourage people to check out Dandolo, incredible guy, even though he is almost solely responsible for destruction of Byzantine Empire, Constantinople was to limp on for the better part of a century but he set the stage for its fall to Turkey during 4th Crusade.
Also the Turkish sieges of the Hospitaller Knights on their islands make great reading. I think I mentioned it before, but "The middle sea: A history of the Mediterannean' by John Norwich is a wonderful read which goes over all this history quite well.
Reading it made me think that the Barbary Corsairs might make a good, if unorthodox, faction for North Africa...

Poor wording, Turkey did not capture Constantinople during 4th crusade, Dandolo sacked it though. My wording might sound like I am suggesting that it did...

And to make it even less unclear:

1204: The Fourth Crusade, under the bidding of Doge Dandalo and the Republic of Venice, decided getting all the way to the Holy Land was an awful lot of work and instead sacked Constantinople and established the Latin Kingdom of Constantinople. Byzantine authority fragmented into some satellite kingdoms, primarily at Trebizond, Nicaea, and Epeiros. In 1261, the Emperor of Nicaea managed to regain Constantinople and thus reestablish the Byzantine Empire proper (although it never managed to recapture all of its lands c.1204).

May 29, 1453: Sultan Mehmet II the Conquerer captures Constantinople. Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos attends mass, dons his armor, and leads the palace guard into the streets. He was never seen again (alive or dead), leading to some fun myths.

And yes, the answer to Demostene's question is supposedly D. I don't remember the exact source that mentions it--probably Anna Komnena's Alexiad, as I don't think that the Catholic chroniclers would have written about cannibalism (though they might have--the source could be Fulcher of Chartres).

    Cheers.
