Oh my, I can see the mods not liking this thread too much at all...
But nevermind, I'll start: Battles at river crossings. What do you think of them? Personally I prefer them to bridge battles as I find the enemy doesnt crowd me so much when they attack, it also looks cool to see them trudging through the water.![]()
I love you all!
Completely disagree. Give me a bridge over a river any day. The angles might be easier for a river, but it's just far to wide to effectively make a choke point and it takes forever for them to cross it. Bridges are a much faster way to find out the result of a battle--especially if you put Greek Fire on the angles. Make sure you set them to fire at units JUST before they hit your holding infantry, then by the time they hit your fresh units they are reduced by maybe half, have morale and burn penalties (when the banner is flashing red they are taking very slightly damage from burns).
Plus, when everything is all bottled up on the bridge, your Greek Fire units are incinerating 40-50 units at a volley at least.
There is absolutely nothing more fun than fighting a defensive bridge battle as the Byzantines now--I took out 3 of the Timurid super armies (without elephants) in one battle that way and my Greek Fire throwers got 500 kills each on Small unit size.

With Greek fire I agree completely, that bridges are the absolute best. But if you were to take a Byzantine army without flamethrowers I think you would fare better on a river bank, simply on a personal level because it suits my playing style better.
Artillery and Byzantine Guard Archers will do well because the enemy crosses the river so slowly, then as soon as they do cross, I mash my shock troops down in one synchronized charge. Thats Varangians and Alamanoi all rushing down in one single line. I find the enemy breaks almost straight away.
I love you all!
This is true, but a faction with armor piercing arrows (everyone but Byzzies and Egypt) also works better on a bridge I think--especially if they have pikes and schiltron spears. Because of the huge concentrated mass on the bridge, none of their arrows miss and you can bottle them up so they seethe uselessly as you cut them down. Plus if you throw in a gunpowder unit or two the angles are almost the same as for greek fire with similar results.
I'll concede that if you're facing a slower heavier army a river bank might be better if you intend on killing them before they reach you or if you have good AP artillery (like serpentines), but once it's melee I have to go with the bridge all the way. It could just be style though, you're right. I can definitely do ranged combat but I prefer combined arms melee and shot.
Standard bridge set up is unit of cheap infantry on the bridge, right behind them pikes, to the sides spears in schiltron, behind them regular infantry, to the sides of them, AP infantry (usually two handed). Behind the regular infantry mounted archers who can fire over the heads of the troops, and then 3 units of AP arrows on either side, usually on a rise.

Go! Go on, go faster! You guys will need to post much faster to beat the mod squads homing in on this location!!
Seriously, there's like a thread for everything in M2TW existence already. And this wasn't exactly well-worded or put forward, now, was it.
Has anyone ever found the soggy terrain from the historical battle of Agincourt in the campaign map? That would be handy.
It would be... but i haven't seen it....
Post one reply for land and post 2 for sea and i'll go running through the forum shouting:

Okay, I gotta get in on this conversation before it gets shut down.
As far as my favorite terrain goes, I really, really like it when the AI positions themselves up a hill and I have to take it. I dunno, maybe it's something about "fighting an uphill battle", but I think it's mostly because as my archers and artillery rain fire while my infantry trudges up the hill, it looks like the opening battle from the movie GLADIATOR, and that is just freaking sick-sauce McGee. This works best when you play Byz against the HRE.
Also, since anything on this thread is fair game, here is a doodle I drew at work today:
