    Default Bible Passages at Funerals.

    I'm working on a bit of a short story right now, and I was wondering, from our religious friends out there, what bible passage is often read at funerals? Something that really epitomizes a Christian funeral service in America? Preferably something mid length (7-8 sentences, no epic, but more than an inspirational quote). Or, even something that is not directly from the bible, just the quintessential funeral speech a priest would give (i.e. "Dearly beloved...")

    Mods, I put this in the Ethos as it's about religion, and I want responses from religious-minded people who would know a lot on the subject, but as its not really a discussion/debate move it to another section at your digression.

    "Ashes to ashes; dust to dust....."

    'From dust you were made and to dust you will return.'

    'And so we commit the body of xxxxxxxxx into God's keeping. Earth to earth, ashes to ashes and dust to dust.'

    I'm sure The Book of Common Prayer would be on the net.

    Like I said mate, you'd be referring to The Book of Common Prayer, not the Bible, but of course the words are based on Biblical expressions.

    The quote from the Book of Common Prayer goes back to the curses in Gen 3 (19)

    In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread,
    till thou return unto the ground;
    for out of it wast thou taken;
    for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

    A friend of mine was a minister. Afaik, he prefered to read Rainer Maria Rilke poems. But I think Christians read normally stuff with a hopefull tenor to bring consolation to the mourning families.

    John 14: 1 - 6

    "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

    Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"

    Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

    The evil Christian Message: Love them, and love them, and love until you die You only have 1 life. And you may be looking back on it for eternity. So just make the most of this life, and love everybody.
