    Icon1 The best of Bizantium

In the vanilla MIITW the Varanguian Guard kiked everyone's ass. What about in SS5.1?
If they are no longer the best infantry the empire has to offer then who is it?

The german equivalents are stronger. Which means the HRE Dismounted Gothic Knights and teutonic Dismounted Halbbrüder. The irish ones too, I think.

Since I have apparently been designated as the Unofficial SS Subforum Grammar Nazi™, I feel compelled to take this opportunity to fulfill my obligations in that capacity:

With that out of the way, Varangian Guard are still, probably, the best heavy infantry on the Byzantine roster. However, Dismounted Latinkon are very nice, and Alamanoi, although not the best, are still a nice option sheerly by virtue of being produced in cities instead of castles. Between Dismounted Latinkon, Pronoia Infantry, Varangian Guard, Alamanoi, and Guard Pikemen, the Byzantines have one of the strongest infantry rosters in the game.

That said, they do not have the single best infantry unit. Dismounted Gothic Knights are absolutely absurd, and thus probably take the title of best infantry unit in the game. Dismounted Halbrudder are also better than Varangian Guard. Varangian Guard also lose (not by much) in a straight-up throw down to Muire, the Irish sword-and-shield heavy infantry with two hit points.

    Cheers.

Tanks for correcting me Landwalker. I'm not a lousy typist but I was writing in a hurry.
About the real reason for this discussion I only have to say that any professional infantry that uses long swords or long battle axes beats the living hell out of anything else.
By the way do Latinkon defeat Hashashim?

Actually, Dismounted Hasham with an armor upgrade can soundly beat Dismounted Gothic Knights.

And every other heavy infantry I've tried so far.

Couldn't believe that, just tried it out and my Dismounted Hasham routed on 5 men left, with ~30-35 Dismounted Gothic Knights left.

Try them versus Dismounted Imperial Knight with armor upgrade.

In RC, axes and maces are superior to swords versus any armor 7 (heavy mail) or above, and superior to longswords versus armor 8 and above.

Note that Dismounted Hasham are a special unit, that has an additional +1 attack and defense as well.

Why are JHI not the best anymore?? I'm not going to contest it - I just want to know why.
