    Default Is this game Hypocritiacal

With all the fuss by the government over violence in video games how come they came up with this

    Americas Army

and use it as a recruiting tool. And there targeting children hoping that if they catch them at a young age they will think of joining the army because of this game.

In fact are our children in reality being trained for the next war with all these military simulations out there now days? We used to play with guns as a kids and learn how to run and hide. Its just kids play right? Now kids learn to kill with video games that simulate very closely the real thing.

    Army Recruits Video Gamers

(CBS) The soldiers are real. But they're also actors, staging scenes for the Army's latest war game.

It's a video game created by the U.S. Army to win over the hearts and minds of American teenagers.

And, as CBS News Correspondent Jim Acosta reports, judging by these faces, mission accomplished.

Game player Rob Calcagni believes the game is going to work on a lot of guys his age.

"Definitely, because it's a fun game," says Calcagni.

The game, "America's Army" has become such an overnight hit, the Army staged a tournament in New York. Recruiters were waiting at the door.

"This is a fantastic recruiting opportunity," says Lt. Col. John Gillette. "We would like to sign up as many as possible. We are looking for five to ten."

One of these teens enlisted after playing the game, the other two are thinking about it, which is exactly what the creator of "America's Army" had in mind.

"We look at all the things that the Army is doing that is under the control of the Army that captures people's attention and the game is number one," says the game's creator Col. Casey Wardynksi.

America's Army has surpassed even the Pentagon's expectations. It's now the number one online action game in the country. The Army hasn't seen a recruiting tool this effective since "Be all that you can be."

But psychology professor Brad Bushman of the University of Michigan, a critic of violent video games, complains "America's Army" isn't real enough.

"War is not a game," he says.

"The video game does provide a sanitized view of violence," says Bushman. "For example, when you shoot someone or when you are shot you see a puff of blood; you don't see anyone suffering or writhing in pain."

"Kids aren't stupid," says Wardynski. "They know if they come into the army there is a reason that we have rifles and tanks and all that stuff."

The players insist they understand the meaning of "game over."

"If you are going to join the Army, you know the risk," says one gamer, Bart Koscinski. "In this game you might die like eight times in like 15 minutes. In real life people know what they are getting themselves into."

New editions of "America's Army" are now being developed for home video game systems -- a move that will deploy even more young cyber-soldiers to the military's virtual battlefield.

SO what if the army has a recruiting tool? I say all to them.

Its hypocritical though for the government to be at the same time talking about regulating violent games when it releases stuff like that.

"Nobody knows military simulations like the world’s premier land force, the U.S. Army. So when the Army began making a simulation to let civilians experience the barracks to the battlefields, it sent its talented development teams to experience the Army as a recruit would. The developers crawled through obstacle courses, shot weapons, parachute jumped, and visited the Army bases, all to let you play Army in the most realistic way ever depicted in a computer game." - America's Army Home Page

    Army Sets Up Video-Game Studio

it released America's Army in July 2002, essentially as an interactive Army recruitment ad. The game is available for download free, and 3.4 million gamers have registered to play it.

CARY, North Carolina -- The U.S. Army, riding the success of its action video game America's Army, has set up a video-game studio with industry veterans to write other kinds of software to simulate training for a variety of armed forces and government projects.

The Army got into the game business when it released America's Army in July 2002, essentially as an interactive Army recruitment ad. The game is available for download free, and 3.4 million gamers have registered to play it.

To build on that success, the America's Army Government Applications office was quietly opened in January in Cary, North Carolina, with a team of 15 video-game creators, simulation specialists and ex-Army personnel. Many of the studio's employees come from local video-game companies like Interactive Magic, Timeline, Vertis, SouthPeak Interactive, Vicious Cycle Software and Red Storm Entertainment.

The new studio is headed by Jerry Heneghan, a West Point graduate, who spent 13 years as an Apache pilot and was a producer at video-game developer Red Storm Entertainment, best known for its Tom Clancy-branded military simulations. The North Carolina location allows easy access to a variety of locales, including Fort Bragg, where the programmers spend time getting up close and personal with new Army vehicles.

"The Research Triangle's universities offer a steady flow of fresh young talent, and we're in close proximity to developer Epic Games, which provides the game engine for America's Army," said Heneghan.

The studio also works closely with Washington agencies, West Point and Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, where the Future Applications Team is located. It also has close ties to Orlando, Florida, the epicenter of military simulation and training technologies.

In addition, the office is working with a team of 24 video-game creators in Monterey, California, on the latest edition to its main franchise, America's Army: Overmatch, which will be released in March 2005.

The office was born when other government agencies, including the Navy and the Secret Service, expressed interest. The game's realistic 3-D environments, which cost $12 million to develop, are opening new avenues for training. For example, there is a classified virtual White House simulation for training Secret Service agents. Special operations forces also practice adoptive training and leadership negotiation with indigenous cultures through a research project with Sandia National Laboratories.

People who complain about recruitment posters in schools and colleges are morons plain and simple and equally stupid are the lazy parents and crappy congressmen(and women) who ***** about video games.

They just do it for some knee jerk votes.

I would say it's not hypocritical, depending on a few things. I know there are people IN government with anti video game opinions, but they don't comprise the entirety of the government, so unless they are a majority, I wouldn't call it hypocrisy.

How would it be hypocritical? As far as I know, the Army doesn't have any problem with games...

Geez man stop towing the Jack Thompson line. It's stupid, it has no basis in reality, and even the liberal judges think he's an idiot.

Get back to us when a keyboard and mouse(and even those stupid laser guns) properly simulate the weight, balance, recoil, noise, and aiming method of the weapons in that game. To say nothing of the heightened emotion and adrenaline and mental training that comes with learning how to actually kill.

You just don't get it do you. Playing a computer game doesn't train you on using any of the highly technical computer systems that any company in the world uses, much less the military's.

Uh... folks in today's world, war is becoming high tech. Tech is short for technology. And technology requires an education on how to use them. A form of this education is video games. Now be good little boys and girls and learn how to shoot the bad guys.
