so today I was walking down a street in a strongly asian district. there were two buskers playing classical asian music. It actually sounded pretty good.
there was this women walking beside me. As we got nearer to the buskers I heard her mutter to herself "you've got to be kidding me."
Then she went up the buskers.
I couldnt exactly make out what she said, but it was something along the lines of:
"this is australia, be a ****ing aussie"

the buskers had the sense to ignore the *****.

man, I was/am so pissed at the ******* , and I didnt get the chance to tell her to ****ing get her act striaght.

anyone who lives in australia should know about teh cronulla riots too.
after that, there was "get/go home , ****ing lebs" graffited all over public restrooms.

australia is meant to be a tolerant multicultural country? at least that is what I grew up to believe with all those multicultural lessons in primary school...

they get instruments , go on a street (sidewalk) , put a bag/tin/something that money goes into in front of them and then start playing (hopefully) good music so that people would donate money.

Oh, that's not being anti-wherever-came-from-attitude, that's just trying to earn a buck.

Unfortunately the morons and bigots will always be with us. The fact that we've just had 11 years of a Federal Government that did its best to stir this kind of crap up (while pretending they weren't) hasn't helped.

That women is a racist alright...and what is a busker, a street musician? Oh wait, thats what someone here said it is, okay. What was her problem though, did she not like the music, or was she dissapointed they were not listining to "Australian" music? If there is such a genre...

    I like Asian music...

    Except I'm half-Chinese, so that's probably why.

its probably more of a stereotype thing, like buskers should be true blue aussies that wear those hats with corks dangling out playing a banja and singing waltzing matilda.

Unfortunately the morons and bigots will always be with us.

that woman's behavious is a bloody disgrace to Australain values.
i've happened past the street musicians-do u mean like the old bloke who's playing that chinese instrument outside town hall?
it's not bad, and i quite like the multicultural flavour of sydney.
i've noticed this type of behavious among a lot of the older ~60-7- yo age group. some are nice, others unfortunately arent and are qutie so ignorant as to have the gall to go up to an asian and tell them to 'go home/whereever you came from'
that pisses me off no end too.
first off, because she's older she should have the wisdom to know better, and secondly, she should have the experience in life to be more accepting of others, irrespective of race, age, creed or culture.
and i agree with a previous poster that the Howard government subtly encouraged this type of mentality given Howard's desire to return Oz to the 50s with the White Australia P{olicy intact.

Today Tonight and well informed are four words that should not be uttered in the same sentence.

That's the ****ing point! Who says anywhere must be multicultural? Since when did anyone say it must be? You take it for granted like it's the ****ing 11th commandment.

It's not surprising when a certain section of society enforces it's (unnatural) will on all that some people disagree.

All i'm pointing out is that if a law was passed to stop people breathing you can't be surprised if most people do not agree. It is human nature to be xenophobic and therefore no matter how much you try and condition a society, xenophobia will always exist.

Yes I suppose I should begin posting apologetics for murderers too, since you know that will always exist.

Basically, you have no actual point with regards to the thread.

And yet i don't see many rants about murderers.......

Besides, why bunch xenophobia with murder? I am not apologising for xenophobes as i do not necessarily think it is wrong. I mean, murder (or rather killing) is sometimes accepted in society like in wars for example, is xenophobia sometimes right?

xenophobia is a result of ignorance, much like what you're displaying for all to see here.
it's human nature to be tribalistic, and this is manifested thru hardcore fans of a particular soccer club etc
what that woamn's attitude was, was a result fo ignorance. she wasnt used to asian culture, so regarded it with a closed mind.
it's not human nature to be xenophobic, it's only human ignorance that breeds xenophobia

What a load of bollocks! You can know something and still dislike it. Calling the other side ignorant is the most intellectually weak argument you can employ.

It's not in human nature to be xenophobic? you are clearly not aware of evolutionary biology. Allopatricism anyone?

And what if that new culture is a threat to your own? I suppose you are happy about the Americanization of NA via cultural rape?
