45) Keep Alliances.
51) Don't start unnecessary wars.
12) Don't wipe out factions.
7,000,000) Don't churn out the assassins and spies.
things that raise the rep:
- releasing the prisoners
- occupy settlements
- having some allies
- having a chivalrous faction leader (?)
things that lower the rep:
- executing prisoners
- sacking or exterminating settlements
- being in war
- breaking an alliance
- attacking neutral faction (?)
- destroying a faction
- taking back a settlement you gave away by diplomacy
- using spies and assassins (?)
- having a dread faction leader (?)
That's all I can remember at the moment. I'm not 100% sure for the items with the question mark.
I can't find any mention in a text file that says a faction leader's dread/chivalry has any effect on global standing. Same goes for using spies and assassins, but if you use those a lot you will end up with more wars (due to failing assassins) and therefore lowering global standing.
The easiest way to increase it is trough alliances and occupying settlements (releasing prisoners has a smaller effect). At the start of a campaign make as much alliances as possible and don't start a war. Your reputation should be up to very reliable in a short while.
If you are at war with a faction but don't plan on attacking them for some while, get a ceasefire to stop your reputation from falling.
Some more things that decrease global standing:
-bribing a settlement (do this 2 times in a single turn and your rating will drop to "despicable")
-cancelling an alliance
-breaking treaty terms (not sure what this means)
-declaring war on an ally (causes a big drop, if you do this 4 times in a single turn, your rating will drop to the lowest value "despicable")
Things that increase it:
-giving military assistance (when requested)

You may be right, as I said, I'm not sure about it.
It is a bit of a trouble to maintain a high rep, but the benefit of it is long lasting alliances and a lot less backstabbing.
I'm not really sure. My opinion is that it has no effect on reputation. Can anyone confirm?
Each turn you're at war you lose a small amount of rep, and each turn you're allied to a faction you gain some. Of course, the amount you gain for alliance is smaller than you lose for being at war
you welcome![]()
Another benefit of having a good reputation is when a papal election takes place. I don't need to own over 50% of the Cardinals to get my pope elected, because allies and neutrals tend to vote for me if I have a good reputation.
Ransoming is a neutral act, just like how your generals won't get dread/chivalry for ransoming prisoners.
hmm, it seems to be more trouble than it's worth. it is impossible to occupy far away huge city without it rebelling in 2 turns. alliance + prisoner seems very easy.
does ransoming prisoners decrease your rep? or it doesn't matter at all?
does going to war with a faction even if they started the war also lower the rep? just being in a war with a faction lowers your rep continuously? that would suck.
these are some of the points I am still confuse about, thx for the awesome replies, especially crusader.
Ransoming doesn't affect it at all, even if the enemy rejects it (the enemies reputation will fall if they decline I think).
Starting a war causes a bigger penalty as to being on the receiving end. Although a state of war will always lower your global standing by a small amount every turn. But a small amount adds up when you are in several prolonged wars. The effect also diminishes the lower your standing goes.
being in a war is fine but so long as you dont start it. i think... well, its worked for me. using assassins at all (even training them) is bad, as is using spies for spying - still unsure about. theres a thread in the stainless steel forums: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=107003
which somehwere has details on how to raise rep. also how to get vassals
also has a list of all the levels of reputability
If you go below "mixed", is it still possible to go back up? Cause whenever I go below and start doing good things, I can never get back up to any good rep.
