secondly lets address the idea that ****ing submarines and ****ing missles are like the penis; they aren't its a vulgar anthropomorphization(morphization for dogs and monkeys?) on par with what dogs or monkeys are capable of : "bark (that thing looks like a dick) bark"-- ****ing come up with something better than the male sexual organ to describe any given thing, at any given time, jesus harold christ on a ****ing rubber crutch.

so please the next time your tempted to compare something to ****ing, the vagina or the phallus--- save yourself the time and slap yourself across the goddamn face for me.

And also one of the most important psychologists in history. Im not saying I agree with him, but you cant just dismiss him like that. You may not agree with his conclusions, but his ideas are some of the founding concepts of modern psych.

The subconcious is still a large part of modern psychology. Almost 15% of therapists in the US are psychoanalytic in nature (solely), psychodynamic therapy stems from Freuding views.

Dont kid yourself, we know that chemicals cause the reactions in the brain, but many of Freud's ideas are going strong.

Also might I point out that Therapy has an equal effectiveness rate as drugs.

Right, different disorders will have different success rates, I should have mentioned that this was comparing therapy to antidepressants for treatment of depression.

I think the male fascination with phallic symbols is more to do with their own ego than anything else. "Look, my bits are bigger than yours!"

Well, to get things back on topic, I have to agree with the poster.

People mostly start categorizing things as "phallic" this and "phallic" that mostly has to do with selective attention. I could make a similar argument about things being shaped like vagina's, providing all these pictures and rationalizations, but people would laugh? Why? Because it's silly.

But, others have this ridiculous idea that because of "masculine dominance" "patriarchy" and the fact that all us men think about is our penises and sex, big powerful men got together, and designed things to look like our sex organs. Such arguments, are plainly ignorant, and reek of sexism.

While, in fact, the reasons missiles and submarines are shaped the way they are is because of physics. There's a reason a missile doesn't look like a flipping Buick.

Every school of thought has some silly ideas. Feminism is not immune to preposterous claims.

Actually with Kohut, or Grunberger one would point out that a phallus can be a narcisistic symbol, from two entirely different sides. This, remaining on the generic aspect (ie. avoiding technicalities on objects, self-objects - but Self psychologists don't call them like that any more - etc.)

Jargon is indeed one of the many problems of psychoanalysis: there is no operational definition which isn't contested by someone else.

Reducing psychodynamic concepts to media representations is thus incorrect: it is quite a complicated matter.
