    Default decline in grammar.

Is it just me or did the quality of grammar decline in the last weeks?

The forums here usually have more intelligent conversations and better grammar than the forums of a lot of other games, I am rather happy about that but lately I see more and more bad grammar, if english is not your first language I understand that mistakes are made, but I see quite a few around that are not really trying.

My advice would be, take the time. Your words represent you on these forums and will shape others their opinion about you. Keep this in mind.

English is not my native language either, but it is the most spoken language, especially online so it really is useful to learn more of this language if you arent too good at it.

Anyways what has the declining of grammer got to do with SS?
Baird: "Hey! Stop shooting it, you're pissing it off!"

Cole: "You're telling me what not to shoot in here? Look at this ****!"

Carmine: "Landown? I heard there's a ****load of grubs down there..."

i personally dont mind a few mistakes or mispellings or errors so long as its readable. i couldnt care less about capital letters either, why waste half a second of my life holding down the shift key (cept like then and now with the smiley and the brackets)

grammar isnt really all that important, im highly educated and the one thing i learned in the end, is that grammar is useful professionally, but casually its not important at all.

while i do dislike how the mobile-text-message crap like shortening crucial 6+ letter words into 3 letters i dont see how a few grammar mistakes would get on anyones nerves.

if it does get on anyones nerves, im not being an ass or trying to be rude, but it could be the initial onset of OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder, it can totally change the person you are inside, especially over trivial everyday things unless you seek treatment.

I don't normally hold a contempt of grammar against most people. Neither do I mind the occasional typographical error. Grammar provides a blueprint for language and thought, because we do think in language. If you can understand yourself with just a rough draft rather than a blueprint, more power to you, but some people may have more trouble following your train of logic if you don't properly lay the track.

I agree with you. Some posts are simply contemptuous of the readers. Why should I read you post if you can't be arsed to even try to spell correctly?

I also use to be picky about grammer but after playing a few online games like WoW and LOTRO it all just came down to being able to understand what that Orc was saying in a timely manner! Proper grammer is more about as Don776 says being used professionally, but at the same time if someone is talking in all shortforms it can be annoying.

I witnessed (well, read) two such instances this past week with horrible grammar, posturing, and attempted putdowns of other posters.

That person has been suspended. My pet peeve however, was the attempted use of a thesaurus to mask an inability to make sense with common words, by substituting them with larger words.

One doesn't need perfect grammar, but one does need to be coherent. I appreciate that there are a lot of non-native English speakers. Were I to write in spanish, I'd most likely make less sense than I do now.

But using a thesaurus just for the sake of using "ten-cent" words just doesn't work.

Amen to that. The misuse of words one doesn't properly understand makes me cringe.

As long as there are no egregious violations of basic English grammar, I can generally live with the stuff that gets posted online. I don't think that it is entirely fitting, however, to say that grammar has no place in casual conversation, especially on an internet forum. Your posts are representative of who you are, and there is essentially no other way for fellow forum members to form an opinion of you. Refusing to take the negligible amount of time necessary to conform to simple rules can come off as laziness, for example, or at worst, it can broadcast a general disrespect for the other members by sending the message that you don't consider them "worth" writing posts that are grammatically sound and not nonsensical.

So, in that respect, adherence to grammatical rules has a place outside of the professional world. True, you may consider it a silly place that really has no effect on your life, but it's a place nonetheless.

    Cheers.

    hehe that made me laugh...
well, I agree with Kyias, and I don't think that grammar is very bad here (ok, I can't really tell, since I'm also very unsure about my own grammar ), but this kind of (fortuntely very rare) comments are indeed pretty terrible to read and when I see such comments I usually skip them before I have to read them 5 times to understand them...

Edit: hmm.. after reading my own comment, I have the feeling that my sentences are a bit long and sometimes maybe a bit confusing, too...

I'm a really bad typer and can't speel worth a crap. So I'm sorry if I offend anyone. I work in a proffesional atmosphere (suit and tie). To escape that, I sit at my desk and contribute to forums like this when I'm suppose to be working.

You know what, I'm really not trying to impress anyone on this sight. Mostly I just try to be funny to make someone smile. I know I enjoy it most when I read something funny (or helpful).

Fortunately, given that my three languages are English, Latin, and Ancient Greek, I don't have to worry about any mix-ups of spelling or the like.

Of course, this summer I'll be starting on French, and after that I'll probably move on to tackle German or Russian. Maybe Arabic. Maybe Church Slavonic. Maybe.... all of them. :hmmm:

    Cheers.

Now I feel inadequate, I only know English and Bad English. As to those with English as a second language, in my experience they tend to be much more coherent than many Americans. They at least tend to be upfront with the fact that they aren't mast0rs of the univarse and TRY to get around the language barrier. We Americans seem to instill a lot of misplaced pride in our young.

On the subject of entertaining, I was thinking earlier about the world in terms of Medieval 2. I'd gotten my caffiene levels back up after a two day draught, so I was slightly less unproductive than usual. Anyhow, China is apparently poised to become the leading world power within fifty years. China, which started with crap for natural resources. Bland food, shoddy building materials, poor ore. Then I compared it with my own country, the grand United States of America, which started out with an enormously rich abundance of resources. Strong wood, terrific iron ore, good oil, plentiful game... well, once we kicked the English off the continent and the French didn't let them landlock us to deal with at their leisure. And in about 300 years, we've run it COMPLETELY into the ground. We're like the AI. We have no more steel industry, we can't get proper healthcare to our citizens, we don't really educate our youth all that well, and we could barely get water to the Superdome inside of a week.
OUR GOVERNMENT IS BEING PLAYED BY THE AI!
