I find Earth vs the Spider to be incredibly stupid.
The idea is that of a classic horror film of a monster from the deep terrorizing a neighbourhood, but the way it was made was awful. The acting sucked, the camera shots didn't help it any, and every time someone was about to be killed by the spider the camera focused on their face and zoomed in slowly as they held their hands to their face and screamed.

I'm forgiving for the low quality affects, like imposing a video of a real spider on the background to make it look huge, because they had nothing better, but I cannot forgive a crappy filming and cast.

Really? Have you seen the director's cut or the cut made for mass consumption?

I think you have to lower your standards for historical pieces, they are expensive which means they need to bring in a lot of viewers to draw even. With that in mind, there are not a lot of sophisticated movie-goers out there, so any historical movie you see will at best be loosely based on history and more-or-less a typical Hollywood gratuitous sex and violence a-thon. By those standards I think Alexander is a pretty good film.

Personally, I think just about every "horror" movie since Six Sense is a contender for dumbest movie ever. It all started with Blair Witch Project which relied on constant tension and emotion as opposed to a story. Then Hollwood took that idea and ran with it, I can't believe how many people like the SAW movies... such an ignorant representation of a serial killer for this day and age.

Movies that just suck and are stupid don't qualify as the dumbest. Confusing, pretentious assrammery masquerading as intelligent art is even dumber. These titles are so dumb that people think that they're great art because they can't understand them.

The Squid and the Whale comes to mind, but there's much worse than that.

Plan 9 of course. The Hollywood stereotype of a B-Movie. And 300, because its underlying themes of the Spartans ''defending'' freedom against the slave empire of tyrannical Persia.

Sparta used the most slaves in entire Greece, hell their entire economy relied on it. And Persia was very generous. Xerxes might not have been the nicest or smartest Persian king around but the Satraps of conquered regions were treated very good and ruled fairly independent. And Persia also created the first human rights. The Spartans wouldn't recognise human rights if it turned itself into a Macedonian sarissa and shoved itself up their muscled butts.

In the "so deliberately dumb it's actually rather hilarious category" is the 1970s Aussie classic The Adventures of Barry McKenzie. A mate of mine brought a DVD of this kitsch gem around to my Election Night Party but we were so busy celebrating Labor's win that we didn't watch it. I watched it last night. It's monumentally dumb.

Barry McKenzie: Now listen mate, I need to splash the boots. You know, strain the potatoes. Water the horses. You know, go where the big knobs hang out. Shake hands with the wife's best friend? Drain the dragon? Siphon the python? Wring the rattlesnake? You know, unbutton the mutton? Like, point Percy at the porcelain?

Blanche: I think he wants to go to the loo.

More on this, "the first gross-out movie", and its vast cultural significance here.
