Default Easy way to extend small faction survival

In many of my games I notice small factions die out, but they have plenty of armies available. To help them stay alive without the re-emergence ability I tried a simple ploy. Basically I took all the starting generals and connected them to the family tree. On top of that I gave them all a few children. I connected them maternally and back one generation so as to avoid any dynasty changes. I also input the name so powerful families that might have actually become rulers if some minor historical point of decision had gone differently. I know some faction had smaller characters os I added 3 named to each faction and just spread the existing non bodyguard units around a bit to not offset economy too much.

Take the present king and give him a father and mother. Connect to that new Kings Father some younger sisters who marry your generals you just made characters. Give them a few kids. These kids are now in the same generation as your King. Your Princes now have a generational step ahead so your original family succession is also secure. Additionally ensure your King has 4 sons and daughters. If he has one 20 year old son for example then add some younger siblings to come of age.

This game is really about taking history and warping it a bit into the 'what-if' so make it fun. Let the small guy have more chances of survival.

I also have thought of customizeing my family tree to get the most of the lack of being able to choose faction heir, but I'm not sure what I have to exactly mod to do this Also I rp with the titles! so I normally try to get my generals a family of their own to pass down their titles as it feels strange haveing generals pick up thease feudal titles without actually governing a place.

wouldnt their survival have more to do with their cities not getting taken?

It doesn't seem to me like many AI factions die out because the royal family is killed off. Unless the player is specifically targeting them with battles and assassins...

They seem to get plenty of adoption and "man of the hour" opportunities.

Seems like AI factions, even the smaller ones, usually die out when their last city is taken. It is true that eliminated factions often have one or two large armies roaming the countryside, but they usually are led by a family memeber.

When ever I play a small faction such as Aragon or Scotland I find that the very start of the game is the most important.

If your off to a bad start, then your game is going to suck for the rest of the way, best thing I do is expand early and aggressively take out nearby super powers.

I don't know if you guy have noticed this or not but factions that are considered "Weaker" actually have stronger military units.

Poland and Denmark both have better units on average than the HRE even though the HRE is so big that it can take on both of these factions fairly easily simply because of a better economy.

So as Denmark or Poland I take out the HRE asap and get my economy rolling asap.

Not only then do I enjoy Denmark's ultra fine infantry or Poland's outstanding calvary but I also make a ton of money.

Of course I am not the AI, but understand that in a game like Total war someone is going to have to die.

If the smaller factions don't die then they all gang up on the bigger ones and they die.

I agree with Fenix_120 in that "weak" factions seem to have slightly better units (imo) and if they are played right at the start they are certain to survive, a good example are the Iberian factions and the many rebel settlements close by which can be blitzed if you know where and when to get em.
