Default RTW Vanilla (ver 1.5)-- various Newb Questions

Is there a "quarantine" button im missing somewhere, or by "quarantine'' in plague-infested cities, do they mean just not moving any of the plagued city's garrison into any other cities?

Are all Barbarian groups forced to just endure plagues; there's nothing you can do other than watch the city pop. die off every turn? This clearly means that barbarian cities can't exceed about 20k people or so, right? And that you are forced to experience periodic plague recurrences in all your big cities, so the only practical thing you can do is set taxes to Very High? Are there any other faction types that suffer this problem as well? I played through as Julii first, and now I'm Gaul and have noticed there's no sanitation facilities...

How do you perform the basic Attack-Move command, in which you order your troop formation to move to a given area-- while STAYING IN FORMATION--while also giving them permission to engage any enemy units they encounter along the way?

Does having an army loaded onto your naval vessels affect the outcome of naval battles? or is their presence completely ignored by autoresolve?

Yes, it means not moving anyone out of the city, although if you do the army will still die off due to plague. Plague lasts about 8 or turns.

I'm sure every culture has to endure plagues, although I could be wrong. I did read somewhere that they slightly affect the outcome/reduce the chances.

I think the army attack-moves by default, try playing a custom game and just moving a unit through another.

No i'm almost certain that it doesn't affect the outcome.

Attack-move is iffy. Phalanxes will stop and fight the units they run into, but I don't think other units get their charge bonuses unless you double click on specific enemy formations

    There is no such command.

You can hold ALT down while moving your army, and that'll end your movement while retaining the same formation. But there is no button that will let your troops automatically engage the enemy while staying in formation. The loose exception to that rule would be mounted archers who can shoot arrows while staying in formation. But all other units (like swordsmen) will most likely break formation when they engage the enemy.

    yes including agents... enemy's too.

there are mods that add sanitation facilities to barbarian factions, so you can go that way if you really want them. it may seem like these facilities prevent plague, but guess what? they contribute majorly to population growth. what happens when a settlement gets too big? the plague has a better chance of occurring. with any faction, plague happens. the barbarians arent neccessarily screwed when it comes to this.

it is the basic movement command! right click somewhere, if an individual of the unit touches an enemy, the whole unit starts fighting it. this is actually sometimes annoying when trying to pull cavalry off for second charges and such.

its the ships and their respective crew, not the army inside that matters. doesn't make sense as the army could help if the ship were to be boarded, but thats how RTW is.

Thanks everyone! I don't want to cheat or mod so I'll just leave that stuff alone.

    More questions:

    1) Sometimes I get the message "This building cannot be destroyed", when I want to destroy certain buildings to get rid of the culture penalty. Like in Syracuse, I want to destroy the Pro-Consul's palace, Greek Roads, and Greek Walls, because I'm Gaul and the city has a 40% cultural penalty. I've already destroyed all the rest of the non-barbarian stuff..

    2) What is the best way(s) to pull your cavalry out of the enemy's lines, after you have made a charge? Rightclick seems to keep them in the fray half the time.

Governement buildings, walls, farms, roads and ports cannot be destroyed. Also, generally the only thing you want to destroy in a taken settlement is the temple to upgrade it to your temples. Culture penalty is never that severe that having 80% happiness worth of happiness can't handle, with a temple and tax bonus.

first of all pause the game after you think the charge is complete. select the unit then hold right click where you want them to go and make a normal formation. unpause the game then with the unit still selected, press your R key to make them run. you could also just double click. sometimes this isnt enough, and you have to end up babysitting them. watch the unit carefully, because they can re-engage while attempting to flee. inside the unit card, the sword icon is a good warning that they are in a melee.
