If I am not mistaken this is XVI century Japanese tameshi gusoku - bullet proofed armor. Am I right? ;-)

Well not sure what more to say, I am quite sure it is tameshi gusoku, it was a kind of heavy armor that was very popular and extremly expensive in japan in the XVI century after Europeans brought gunpowder weapons. It was a common practice that smiths would actually fire bullets at the armor to prove to the people buying armor that it is bullet proof.
