    Default The Hunnic Horde

Hi everyone, wright now I am playing IJ, after securing the WRE in IBFD 6 to its former glory, I decided to give IJ a try. To be onest I had alrady played the first version of IJ released by Goth a long time ago. And I am enjoying this version, of course thanks to IBFJ.

Now in IJ the Franks, Alemanni and the Goths are easily beaten even on VH. I had four victories on the Danube, with the Emperor himself leading the Palatina units, the Vexillations and Auxillia had done a similar job on the Rhine, but believe me I found the Huns a tough nut to crack. Even if the Sassanids invade the eastern provinces with full cavalry army, they just stay in formation, firing their arrows, the romans sending back theirs, they charge, are meet by the Legio Armatus, outflanked by the heavy cavalry, end of story, they flee. But not the Huns :hmmm:, they keep dancing around me, as if their arrows are unlimited, but they very rarely charge. I would like to know how other palyers fight against them, and sorry for the long post.

    Cheers.

    Hi,

I'll give this a shot. I have only played against the Huns as a Roman general. I use Roman tactics. I use bridges, forts and hilltop advantage. As I have stated in a few other posts I like to utilize the spearmen. Spearmen will be the first to stop routing. And spearmen in general are easilly encouraged. The bulk of your army should be spearmen with perhaps 3 units of bowmen. A hun will never stay and fight hand to hand unless they really have to. A hun would rather shoot and run, and when they are out of Amunition will retreat. What you want to do is comprimise as many of these huns in this battle as they will only fight you again and again untill they have been dwindled and spent. By spreading your spearmen out in the thinnist line possible and charging in ranks is the most effecient way to kill and route the Hun. I myself like my bowmen on my flanks and one in the middle. be agressive and attack with your bowmen first slightly ahead of your spears, keep your spears behind your archers but close. Most of the hun are light calvary with minimul armour so they will definantly feel fire. I like to use the middle bowmen unit as a fire unit and the other 2 bowmen as armour peircing(sounds like flesh). If you have HA for your flanks this is even better. HA will not only outflank but they will also run down routers as well.In summary be agressive and force the huns hand, when they make a move that is not textbook protocol, your heavy horse General will be there to capitalize.

I have yet to engage the Huns, but I'd say the key is to have a dominant hill or city position, with legions (their javelins can be useful) and archers (more than three, for sure)

Not too much cavalry, since they would most likely be outclassed anyhow, But if you have better cavalry than the Huns, feel free to protect your flanks with them.
