    Default samogothian axeman

I am not sure if I spelled that name correctly. in the teutonics campaign, lithuania gets this unit when you build the shrine it needs. why is it so useless? I mean, it dies to the order spear man when it is defending a wall section as the spearman came up on ladders. I mean, I would totally understand if it was a close fight, but it was a total slaughter, Teutonic order spearman lost like 10 out of the 112, that is pretty incredible since the axeman stats are waaay higher than the spearman.

I don't get it. oh, they are both unupgraded.

    go to the kingdoms forum...
But it might be bug or you did not click attack on the guys which if you do that sometimes increases the effectiveness of the units while defending the walls. And spearmen are tricky they often times are more resilient then the stats would predict... and order spears are some high quality spearmen.

look, I would understand if the spear man were defending, not attacking a wall section via a ladder. but loosing 10 men while killing my entire unit of 16/16 stat unit is crazIII!!!

could this be cause by a super slow attack animation? why would something like this still be broken in the expansion after it was discovered in vanilla?

I wish the attack animations would go away, CA should stop using it in their games if it isn't gonna be balance properly. get the battle mechanics of RTW back! where stats matters.

Mechanics probably have something to do with it.. i really hate vanilla two handers... SS really makes them effective again.
How thick was your line on the wall? if it was just 2 deep sometimes the attackers can locally overwhelm the defenders and get a bunch of men on the walls... although even then i would give the spearmen only even odds of even winning.
Try the kingdoms forum they can help more then this one can.

Ive just modded stats for Crusades today to improve useness of Canons of Holy Sepulchre for example but all of them (Varangians, tabarbaryia, Guard of Edessa, etc..). I increased their def skill to take little bit less casualties from HC charges, their attack was doubled and finally they are usefull. The best way how to deal with those guys are now arrows (as used to be in history) and HC charges but charges only, no prolonged battles for they are slain in quite short time. Bcs of this I put one more hitpoints to HC and bodyguards. Now I am first time more-less satisfied when playing them. Twohanded units takes more cassualties than swordsmen with shields (typical defensive units) but they do much more damage for it. I also increased pikes attack value by 50 per cent.
If anybody wants to try Crusades (I play it with Darth AI) here is my files but first back up your current one.
