Girl 'had eyes gouged' during exorcism - report
    7:35AM Monday November 26, 2007

Surgeons battled to save the sight of a teenage girl who had her eyes gouged during last month's fatal exorcism in Wainuiomata, it was revealed today.

The 14-year-old, who nearly died during the exorcism which killed her cousin Janet Moses, needed emergency treatment to save her sight after relatives scratched at her eyes to remove the devil, the Dominion Post reported.

The girl had chunks gouged from her eyeballs.

The October 12 ceremony, which Ms Moses' father said was run by family on her mother's side, was arranged to lift a Maori curse. The curse was believed to have started after Ms Moses' sister stole a stone lion statue from the Greytown pub.

The Dominion Post reported that the girl's family believed they saw the devil in her eyes - and tried to scratch out the curse with their fingers.

Relatives also syringed water into her eyes and poured it down her throat in an attempt to drive out the curse.

Ms Moses, 22, a mother of two, also had her eyes scratched and water syringed into them before she drowned as up to 40 relatives watched.

After her death, family members continued to work on her young cousin in the same way.

Another five people, aged 14, 15, 16, 29 and 31 were also treated in the curse-lifting ceremony, but not harmed, the newspaper said.

The 14-year-old was taken to Hutt Hospital close to death.

An eye specialist from Wellington Hospital was called in to treat her injuries. She remained in hospital for several days.

It is understood that doctors believe they have saved the girl's sight.

The teen was later taken into Child, Youth and Family care but the agency would not confirm whether she was still in care.

A spokeswoman said the girl was in a safe and secure environment and the agency was working with the family.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Levy told the newspaper police were still working through evidence, seeking legal advice and consulting Maori experts.

"We know what's happened, but we're assessing the culpability of individuals," he said.

    To state the obvious:

Religion is a beautiful, loving, compassionate and forgiving thing, and I am sure that God is pleased they did what they did, and how they did it.

If it wasn't for the fact I found out about this on the internet, I could have been sure I had travelled back 500 years or so. I wonder if the perpetrators feel guilty for torturing their own family, or if they feel pleased to have purged the evil from them - presumably to allow them passage into some afterlife thing?

Who knows maybe the kids were actually under the curse of the One Ring. After all it happened in New Zealand.

    So did this...

I hate crazy people... all 40 of them should be jailed for murder and attempted murder. First they kill some woman, then scratch out the eyes of her cousin. Seriously, if they get away with it New Zealand Law sucks..

I wonder if the women struggled against them, cuz if they did it'd be false imprisonment and some assault and battery added in.

I await with interest the trial of the people concerned. I can BET you their laywers pull some political correctness indigenous Maori tradition crap. Even though it was a CHRISTIAN exorcism with a bit of Maori flavour by all reports...

The reports sounded more like Maori stuff with a whiff of Christianity waved over it to me. The bits about demons being in her eyes etc is pure Polynesian folklore.

Not that it matters - ignorant superstition is ignorant superstition no matter if it has a Stone Age Polynesian or Iron Age Middle Eastern origin. Same juju, different jabber.

What I find disturbing is that in that group people nobody was like " whoo hold on everyone lets take a step and think about what we are about to do"
at least that, any sane person would shouted " Time the **** out everyone here needs to take there fingers outta of peoples eyes.!"

Man, I hope that judge has the brains to kindly inform them that the law is the law and that it neither respects nor bows to religion/tradition.

I bet he didn't even have a prescription for his exorcism.

I do have a demon, not in my eyes of-course but further down my body .

I disagree with exorcisms.... Mainly because I wasted £40 at the cinema watching 'the exorcism of Emily Rose', But also because if some respectable man suddenly began to have a fit then he needs an exorcism.

    typical religious cop out.

the kid stole something from a pub, probably for a dare. should we punish the kid, maybe think more about how we have taught her to behave?

no, she is clearly possesed i mean our darling wouldn't do such a thing, lets scratch out her eyes.
