attaching boss and spine to the scutum..
making a metal hump some sort at the middle of the shield...
????
What exactly do you need help with?
Import the model into Max, change it like you want to, and export it. If it's just going to replace one of the existing units in game, just overwrite that model, you won't even need to do any coding.

Personally I'd recommend making an entirely new shield. You'll need to be fairly familiar with how 3dsmax works though (that means editing meshes, creating new objects, rigging, UV mapping, etc.). If you can't do those things I'd recommend watching Professor420's video tutorials (see wiki) first.

read toturials. To put a boss,i suggest making a sphere with about 12 segments and opening the edible mesh modifier. then select the verticles on one half and delete them. then position them with the shield. then use the link tool
(sniff around the tools to the left of the select tool for something that looks like two linked boxes). click and drag from the boss to the bone for the left hand. now let go of the mouse button. export to cas,and ur good

To merge an element of a model you have to have it saved as a max scene, and yes it does work.
maybe you didn't save as CAS?

did it export properly, did you give it a texture, is it named properly (do shields have to be named shields? I don't remember)?
Have you modified and exported anything successfully before? So that it works in game? Maybe you should have a closer look at some tuts or Professor420's videos to see what you're missing...
Also, are you sure that you're checking the right unit in game? Also, remember that there are 4 different LODs for each unit... so if you only modify one, the others wont be affected...

No. However, if he is importing geometry and has this selected, and then attaches it to the existing shield model, the existing shield model "becomes" part of the imported geo., and is no longer attached to the hand bone (in which case you'd just go to new schematic view and reattach to the lhand bone).(do shields have to be named shields? I don't remember)?
Selecting the existing shield model and then attaching the new geometry will retain the rigging and save you the trouble, though.
You just need to attach it and its done???
As mentioned above, it depends how you do it. Assuming you attached it correctly and the rigging (how things are attached to the animation bones) was preserved, readjusted the UVW coordinates of the added portion to fit into your texture, exported this new .cas file and made necessary adjustments to your texture, it should work fine in game.
As mentioned before though, if this is your first time trying to do something in 3dsmax, you are much better of starting at the basics and working up to other things.
There's a thread for them in the tutorials section, oddly enough, among all the other 3dmax tutorials.
Well ive searcherd there at tutorials of unit editing and found a thread but didnt find any videos??
well, the easiest way is to go:
Total War Center Forums > Total War: Eras > Rome Workshop > Tools, Tutorials and Resources > Forum stickies > Modding Tools and Resources and Total War World Catalouges
and scroll down until you find the link to the thread with the links. You can also find it yourself by going to:
Total War Center Forums > Total War: Eras > Rome Workshop > Tools, Tutorials and Resources > Tutorials for unit editing > RTW Modelling Video Tutorials 1-5 Released
that thread is currently located on the second page of the "Tutorials for unit editing" sub-forum
However, it seems that the link that Prof has provided is no longer valid... I've PM'd General Sun about it (since they were hosted on his site).
