Default What keeps you playing Rome?

What is the lasting appeal of RTW for you?

Now that there are theoretically superior (i.e. newer) total war games like Medieval II and Kingdoms, what keeps bringing you back to Rome?

Personally I missed Rome when it first came out, and only picked it up after playing MTW2 and Kingdoms for quite a while. I assumed it would be much more basic but I have to say it's probably the best total war game. The period itself is much more interesting IMO, and I like the fact that there are more regions per area.

The mods. Vanilla Rome is worse than vanilla M2.

For me it has to be era and mods, and I've heard several times that MedII is not that much better than RTW.

The era is just so much more exciting than any other. Medieval doesn't have just ONE dominating force.

    The mods, too are amazing.

pobably the fact that i can play it with 20000+ on field with my lappy and the fact that factions have varied troops, m2 may have gotten rid of clone wars but they replaced it with clone faction wars which isn't that fun... Also everyone loves ancient Rome. Oh and the troops may look better in m2 but when zoomed out and in the heat of battle its hard to tell whats going on (and thats with settings maxed out on my pc...)

    The Lasting Appeal:
    - I prefer Antiquity over Medieval
    - superior tactical gameplay compared to other Ancient warfare-themed games
    - Multiplayer
    - Macedon
    - I don't need to buy a new computer to play it
    - exchanging battlefield stories on forums

    What keeps me playing Rome?

a)The fact that I LOVE Rome! In my mind there wasn't any other period in the entire history when a single nation managed to achieve domination against so many odds. The Romans had to destroy superpowers, not decaying factions! Also the Legions:who didn't have a chill running down his spine when he saw for the first time the Legions marching?

b)The sheer pleasure to travel back in time and emulate the building of the Roman Empire! You had to fight different types of soldiers and warfare philosophies...In Med2 you fight infantry, cavalry and skirmishers vs the same roster with slightly different unit types(but the main concept is the same -
infantry, cavalry and skirmishers!).In Rome you had the Legions fighting the phalanxes; The post marian maniples facing off the barbarians etc. You feeled like you really faced a different civilization, not men like yours dressed in different uniforms.

c)The fact that when you managed to create your little empire - whether in Gaul and Spain or Greece and Asia minor or Africa and Egypt the game went on a higher gear!CIVIL WARS! To fight for your right to be the first man in Rome...Priceless!

d)The fact that before Rome we had Medieval 1 on our hands;I personally couldn't believe my eyes when I played Rome for the first time!A 3d map, units that moved, soldiers with full detail in your battalions etc. What so drastically changed between Rome and Medieval 2?They improved the graphics and the battle AI.Rome on the other hand was a marvel to behold compared to Medieval 1!I was awed...

e)Mods!Every time I begin to grow tired on this game a new mod is released and off I go again! Truly that is the reason I haven't bought yet Medieval 2!

f)I like antiquity more that medieval times.

All of the reasons that these guys have already posted.
"So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show."

The era and the factions. Also, seeing massive phalanxes in action has been tickling my fancy since I read that one book about the battle of Thermopylae(don't remember it's name, though =( )

    - the mods definitely.

    - I can actually pick a faction. With M2tw I find myself hopelessly wandering from campaign to campaign, trying to find something to hold my attention. With Rome, I've got Macedon, Ptolies, Greeks, and the Romans of course. What else do you need?

As others have said, most definitely the mods - they are so varied that each one is like playing a new game. For example, EB and RS, both great mods but the slower paced EB contrasts so much with the 0-turn recruitment of RS that there's a mod for every occasion.

I still play Rome Total War because the era is fascinating. I love expanding Sparta(Greek Cities), the Selefkian Empire and Egypt of the Ptolemaioi!
But the main reason is my PC capabilities. I have AMD Turion64 2Ghz, 1GB Ram, Ati Radeon Xpress 1100. So it is obvious that rome runs faster than Medieval 2.
