I've never installed a mod to a game. I've downloaded and installed the Long Road. How do I get it to start? When I click on the shortcut in the start menu , Vista asks for medieval2.exe. I don't know why it is asking for this.

check that the route of TLR is inside your medieval folder, as it sounds to me that it can´t find the Medieval installation. To double check this navigate to your medieval2 folder and you should see inside the tlr folder.
Make sure you follow the instruccions in the download thread.

acegogo: It's installed under the Medieval folder. I think you're right as it is looking for the Medieval installation. Where would I find "medieval2.exe"?
I think I followed the instructions in the download thread. Do I need "TLR" 1.2, because I merely installed 2.0 without 1.2. I have the regular patch M2TW 1.2.
in you r medieval2 folder you should find that file,
the correct installation is:
Medieval 2
then patch 1.2 (oficial release)
then TLR 2.0
then and they are optional, installing 1.2 gfx and TLRaced
(this last two give you gxf variants.)

Okay, just to see if it would help, I just reinstalled Medieval 2 (store bought), and downloaded the official 1.2 patch. When I try to install it, my computer extracts the files fine, and it asks me what language I want and suddenly it says that: "The setup has detected that no version of Medieval II: Total War is installed. This update requires that a previous version of the application be installed."
that is what i was saying it seems that you either install stuff in diferent folders, otherwise there is no reason for it to say that, being a legal copy of the game.

You should be able to choose which folder to extract it into. If your using winrar or something similar. At the top it will have a button that say extract, then you get to choose which folder to extract it to.
The store-bought (rather than Steam- why do people use that?) CD version installs into the SEGA folder. Did you perhaps change the destination when you installed it?
Hopefully, you saved the downloads of TLR 2.0 and the TLR-addon files, because the download sites seem to be having problems. If you did, make sure they aren't anywhere in your Medieval II Total War folders by putting them into a safe location (like the Downloads folder in Vista), then try the following:
Delete everything in the Medieval II Total War folder. This folder is simply one level further in from the SEGA folder which is the default installation path. If you don't have a SEGA folder, find the "Medieval II Total War" folder using search. Make sure the folder Medieval II Total War is deleted too. If there is nothing else in your SEGA folder, you can delete it too.
Use a registry cleaner, just in case.
Reboot.
Now reinstall M2TW from the CD. This time, let it install into the SEGA folder. This will save you many headaches. Game makers assume that's where you put things when they make patches.
When you're done installing M2TW, check your directory structure to be sure the game installed into Progam Files/Sega instead of somewhere else. It works fine for me with Vista; but as well all know Vista is a mess when it acts up.
The 1.2 patch for the game is called MIITW_UPDATE2_EFIGS_RC_Final.exe and will automatically install into the correct folder - SEGA/Medieval II Total War. You shouldn't need to change anything in the path if you allow M2TW to install to the default pathway.
If you're still having problems at that point, then it's something with Vista, not the game. Scream a lot and pull your hair out in clumps because you're hosed.
If the patch installs OK, then:
Install TLR 2.0
Install the add-on for TLR if you want it, for realistic blood, etc.
You should now have a bunch of new files in your Medieval II Total War folder. If you want to make a desktop shortcut so you don't have to use the start button and you didn't let M2TW make one for you initially, make a shortcut for Launcher.exe in the Medieval II Total War folder and move it to your desktop. If you lauch the game from that, you'll get the M2TW start and clicking on the play button will give you a choice to play M2TW or the Long Road or the Long Road Hotseat and any other mods which were made with proper configs.
Install Acegogo's Gfx addon from the stickied thread. Extract it into SEGA/Medieval II Total War/The_Long_Road/Data - not into the main data folder in M2TW!
Install any other modsfor TLR, like my updated resources files. Good luck!

@tn56
check out averoes post for your solotion!!!
@ave
ave, do you think that you can give a hand in why we get ctd´s in slave turn? seeing that you have done an excellent job with the resources????
I have managed to make them(slaves), build and recruit units( they are a lot harder to conquer now), but I still get ctd!!!!

I have no idea what would cause the CTD. I don't seem to have it happen to me; although, in my testing I rarely play past 1180 or so. Does the CTD happen later?
I only heard that it happened and that add_money slave, 40000 would fix it. I've been using that since I first downloaded TLR2.0 when I got back. So every game, on the first turn, I open the console and type add_money slave, 40000 just that first time and haven't had a CTD issue. Just typing it in that one time on the first turn seems to work. Then again, I haven't played TLR 2.0 not using it.
Not only do they build and rebuild, but they actually recuit armies, have massive garrisons and field armies, not easy sir, not easy!!!! especially those regions that take long to take, you should see milan´s and france´s struggle to capture Marseille and Toulouse!!!!
just damm those CTD´s.
@ave
so, what are you using if not TLR2.0????

I am using TLR 2.0, the blood addon, your gfx addon and my resource changes and that is, literally, all that I'm playing. I have no other mods installed, and I recently uininstalled/reinstalled everything and went back to just the above without Condo's changes.
Some possibilities.
I haven't unpacked. If you have, that's one difference.
I went straight from M2TW + 1.2 patch to TLR2.0 plus the addons. I didn't upgrade from TLR 1.9 or earlier versions. Maybe there's a stray file floating around?
I'm using Vista Home Premium. My system is an AMD 64 2x dual core 4200+ 2.20 GHz, 3 Gig ram, ATI Radeon x1650 graphics card. If any of that helps, although it seems unlikely since various people seem to have this CTD.
I haven't had a CTD yet. So, I'm assuming it's because I'm using the add_money slave, 40000 on the first turn. I've also been playing with toggle_fow since I've been playing with the resource placements and values. I haven't tried playing without either. I also haven't taken a game past year 1180, since I've just been looking at trade issues for each faction.
Edit: I'm also not using the 1.3 patch. And I haven't bothered to buy Kingdoms yet, either.

yep, you are playing same as I, same installation, same addons, even same RAM and GFX card!!!
I am going to experiment with the slave money bussiness at the first turn, as it is the only turn where is not really reading the code a keep modifying.
let me know if you find anything, by the way, my last killer CTD was with the Fatimids and the year was 1157

Will do! It has to be something simple. Frankly, I'm a little astonished that I haven't seen any CTD's.
they also come and go, as I have had other campaigns without ctd´s but as I never go past 1200 a don´t know!!
I haven´t played with gunpowder ever in TLR!!!! and it´s been over a year now!
