OK, so I started palying picked my faction, and then pressed the check mark to end the alert that SPQR has fallen, and the game just cashes to the desktop...help anyone?

What version of RTR are you using? And, is it crashing before starting a campaign or before getting to the main menu? If it`s the first and you are playign RTRPE make sure to delete the map.rwm files.
I think a number of people had problems playing the intro movie. The -nm switch gets around that one though.
RTR 6 Gold can become unstable from around 60BC onwards. The RomeSage Utility can be used to jump forward in time (a year or so at a time). It finally clears the problems as it approached 1BC.
I played a Roman campaign into about 77AD (or later).
A Macedonian campaign I've been running has reached 140AD without problems. I guess that implies the problems may be aorund the civil war that used to break out between the Roman factions.
