Default A revelant quote by Robert E. Lee

"It appears we have appointed our worst generals to command forces, and our most gifted and intelligent to edit newspapers. In fact, I discovered by reading newspapers that these editor-geniuses plainly saw all my strategic defects from the start, yet failed to inform me until it was too late. Accordingly, I am readily willing to yield my command to these obviously superior intellects, and I will, in turn, do my best for the cause by writing editorials, after the fact". - Robert E. Lee

Its so hard to not absolutely love Lee, though ultimately he is probably a pretty negative thing in history.

Not really, it is due to the genius of Lee's generalship that Lincoln was forced to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. After the war, Lee was a force for reconciliation and integration.

Warfare is a profession, like carpenting. Also, warfare is an extension of Politics, more often then not, the media criticizes a millitary figure because they have in-adequate resources to judge his professional skill, and disagree with the politics for which he is being used. So basically, people from moveon.org have no idea what they are talking about, and merely slander someone for political gain.

Im not saying they shouldnt have the right to say it, Im just saying they should utilize a More important right, freedom of thought, and realize what i just said. Then, they should also use another right, freedom of choice, and choose not to make fools out of themselves.

They should exercise freedom of thought, and do and think exactly what I tell them to.

The blame for those deaths falls on the shoulders of politicians, not generals.

    Good quote, though.

As far as the relevant part.

We did tell you so. Our government plainly did not listen to any of it. And neither did the masses, who spent weeks hyped up on blind patriotism to see the what was at stake.

Its not conflicting with the political side whether a war is right or wrong, rather he is attacking the editorialist who attack how he is waging the war with the benefit of hindsight yet claim to have known everything beforehand.

And that quote was when... before conglomerated media took over?

Sheesh, but yeah, great quote from a great man.

Who in this thread said they wanted that freedom squelched? They're just exercising their own freedom of speech.

It's not about the reporters criticizing the war, it's about them criticizing how he fights the war. Without knowing anything about tactics in the first place.

Actually it has absolutely nothing to do with freedom of speech and I really fail to see how you thought it did.

Good thing they didn't have internet back then...Imagine the criticism he would have received from bloggers and armchair generals!

Moveon.org isn't a press or the press nor news. It's an organization. It's quite visible in their web address (.org)

    If no attempt question again.

If yes what is the point of this topic?

I thought most intelligent people would realize that quote is totally and utterly irrelevant to what I said.

sure it is. Why would anyone want to listen to the press about tactics and warfare instead of generals and army commanders if the press is only out to make money anyway?

They have the freedom of press to write what they want, but we have the freedom of speech to criticise them for what they write. Or else do you Ferrets and Rhinosour believe freedom of speech is only one way?
