    Icon12 The prayer thread

As a believer I would like to know what you pray for when you talk to whatever God you believe in. Doesn't matter if you prefer Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism or whatever. Specifically I mean what you pray about in your own words when you're in private.

I'm a Christian and I pray for protection for my family, friends and me, and most importantly I ask God to help me become a better person and always act the way he wants, to bring his and his creations awesomeness to everyone and everything.

Also, I'm looking for some new inspiration because I mostly pray for the same stuff and I fear that I might bore God a little.

And please do not post here if you just want to express your hate on religion I have enough of that in my real life! Thanks

I stopped praying a long time ago... but I used to pray every single day til' I was smart enough not to. My childish prayers always went a bit like this, "Dear God, please help the poor people, help my family, help me from getting continuously beat up by my older brother, and give me some candy tomorrow." Even though my intentions were pure, when the things I asked God didn't seem to happen, I realized that no one was listening. Then, I stopped asking my imaginary friend for things, I took charge of my own self, and I punched my brother in the face. And my prayers were finally answered. Sure, the poor people remained poor, my family was not helped, and no one gave me candy, but at least I understood that the world is not regimented by the imagined, but by the tough physical realities that interact with our imagination. When I punched him in the face, my brother was no longer the indestructible monster that I imagined him to be. He became as human as I. And my mind returned to reality.

Good nostalgia there... that must've been a decade ago.

Yes... It's quite more like that.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

The last time I prayed it was in the summer, a loved one was going trough real ****** things at the moment. It didn't help her a bit. So I lost my fate around then actually and stop praying.

Well, Buddhists or Atheists dont pray, as such, I tend not to pray. But back when I was a believer, the only thing I would pray for was the safety and health of my family and friends.

He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

Makes me sad hearing about many of you losing faith. I will never give up my belief in God, never, regardless what happens and to whatever points God listens or not.

Well, to tell you the truth, it also makes us sad that you theists keep trying, so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point. Either way I don't think that anyone really needs to feel sorry for anyone here, atheist or religious.

Well yea so it helped you in whatever kind of way, maybe made you feel better and able to handle and process the whole thing even you don't really believe in God. So it can even pay off to atheists.

I said that like theists are sometimes saddened by atheists losing faith, atheists might feel the same way for theists who hold on to their faith. Then I went to say that neither side really has any reason for feeling sorry for the other, though they do anyway.

What do I pray? It goes a little something like this...

Those who depart from the Orthodox faith, dazzled by destroying heresies, do thou enlighten by the light of thy Holy Spirit, and unite them to thy Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
(that's just one part of the prayer of the commemoration of the living, one that I rather like)

O Lord, save thy people and bless thine inheritance; grant victories to the Orthodox Christians over their adversaries and by the virtue of thy cross preserve thine inheritance.

Yes, I do pray in archaic English. It's much better that way.

I was actually planning on making a post almost exactly like this (except Catholic or Muslim), but I was aiming for satire.
    1) The creation of the world is the most marvelous achievement imaginable.
    2) The merit of an achievement is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its creator.
    3) The greater the disability (or handicap) of the creator, the more impressive the achievement.
    4) The most formidable handicap for a creator would be non-existence.
    5) Therefore if we suppose that the universe is the product of an existent creator we can conceive a greater being — namely, one who created everything while not existing.
    6) Therefore, God does not exist.
