    Default Betrayed!!!

    therer're traitors all around me!!
first there're the honourless dogs (milan and spain) each of whom have independantly betrayed me!( i'm VH/VH) via attacking islands i own like cagliari and corsica.
then there're upstart captains who believe they can hijack an army and seek trheir own fortunes at the expense of their lord! mebbe it's to do with my faction leader having 4 authority but still....i mean when i used to play england it happened when my kingdom was massive, taking half the map, but tyhis's happened when i've only got like 12 settlements!

Don't get any allies then, though i know it can get quite frustrating when everyone betrays you.

Ruthlessly destroy them until they can no longer betray anyone, regardless of the consequences. Now that's a fool-proof plan.

I find alliances rather useless. The AI constantly betrays me. I prefer using the alliance as a way to keep attention away from me while I amass an army at the enemy's borders awaiting for my next turn to declare.

Island towns and close by allies are begging for betrayal, unless you can be bothered keeping full stacks as garrisons, and even then they will probably still blockade your ports. I prefer to use islands to herd my vassals off the mainland. I get all of Spain's land and they get Caliguri or something. I'm not a tyrant, yet I still own all. Win win.

My alliances are fine, the AI has gotten better since release.. MUCH better. Still flawed at points though. Normally when they blockade a port they're BEGGING for a ceasefire and alliance next turn, and will often give you enough money to make up for the lost trade. (Or even a settlement if you're shrewd.) I had Scotland as my greatest ally for an entire Campaign as England, Never so much as looked at each other wrong, I gifted them a bit of France though, to make expansion in other directions possible. It proved well worth it, saved me the money for the armies to kill France off, Scotland, despite being dead broke stuck it to them hard. Anyway, do you have your game patched up to 1.3? if you're using 1.0 you're going to have HUGE diplomacy issues.

nah i patched and upgraded it cuz i installed kingdoms as well.
mind you, i do agree with the distant ally thing. i allied with the pope and he hasnt really betrayed me (just that when my papal approval goers down, he tends to threaten me etc, and interferes with my plans for milan's destruction.
the mongols have been good allies, but then and again as sicily my closest settlement to where thery're settled (antioch) is cyprus.
    safe on me island
true to history the papacy loves sicily under the normans and thus sicily can get away with a lot (assuming they dont vote the wrong way)

I hope my alliance with England (playing Milan) is going to stay between amiable and good. Im at about turn 50, and the scots have almost stoled their land so they only got Caen and that city to the south west left, except Nottingham. Im going to let them handle the scots on their island and help them in the french regions. Military acces granted both ways. You think that military acces has any affect, good or bad on this matter?
Im allied with the pope wich is fair enough even tough the current pope is german, so not very good relations right now. Also I had alliance with venice and hre but they abviously are not compatable with milan so after 10-15 turns they backstabbed me.

And so to the last I say this.. Is there a chance that I can keep an alliance with Portugal as Spain??? ANyone has experience in that? Relations are now at turn 2 uhm cant remember name of word coz I haven't slept for some while, but they are in other words ****in' good. I married one of the princesses to their faction heir and also regluar alliance. Im planning having them as long term ally to beat of the Moors and the rest of europe if necessary. Maybe even some nice armies shipped accross the sea wich I am yet to try in my mediaval career.

I find the most endurable alliances to be the ones made with factions as far from you as possible. They may not be the most profitable ones, but at least you can say you have a trusted friend.
Last time a played France, Poland proposed me an alliance sometimes in turn 30 or 40. I expanded southwest and then into the Holy land, so I had no border with them. And the alliance lasted the whole game.

Milan has betrayed me twice in my English campaign. Well sucks for them, now my cardinal is the pope and I called a crusade on the Milanese after I had agreed to a ceasefire with them if they gave me 5000 florins. Although I would have had to deal with them sometime anyway to accomplish my scheme of conquering all of italy and eventually Rome... Just as long as my dear ally HRE doesn't betray me =P.
