Quintus Cornelius Regulus,hearing all these,return to the podium.His expression reveals nothing,in fact he looks as calm as a cup of water. He starts moving up the stairs,looking around him;Many look at him with hope,others with discontent. When he finally reaches the Podium,he turns and smiles at Lepidus.Then with renewed strength,he speaks to the people:
I am most sorry that some feel that way;
The truth though is that I tried to do what is best for the Republic with the resources available at the time.The Republic faced nearly 6,000 Greeks in Italy and 3,000 Carthaginians close to Capua. What would you have me do? I did what the senate wanted,what the senate have voted me to do;I protected the Republic by killing these enemies.
You wished me to take on the Etruscans?You had only to ask. You wished me to avoid the conquest of Southern Italy and defend the Ager Romanus instead of expanding it? You should have motioned that in the senate,not accuse me of lack of forethought on the aftermath of the campaign.
The senate wanted me to march to Tarentum;Otherwise when I told you that I planned to do that,you would have vetoed the proposal down.
The senate wanted me to focus on the South instead of the North;If not,I would be instructed to maintain a legion north instead of what armies I could spare.
You are seeking leadership,Lepidus; Is there anything more proving for having this virtue that the fact that the legions were victorious every single time?Anything more proving from the fact that no enemy has crossed our borders and lived?You wished to be told what to do,where to stop,expand,go or where to fight?Then what you want senator is a dictator,not a Consul; I did my duty at the best of my potential. Was it enough? I believe it was.
That is the reason I accepted the triumph you offered me; Because it seemed at the time that you recognized my value;But I was wrong to do so.
Yes - I let vanity get the best of me; Yes - I was overjoyed to be recognized for my accomplishments.I can't help but have these vices;no man is perfect,Lepidus.And in a side note,the best of men are always those with the worst vices of all;Remember Alexandros.Whatever the reasons though for accepting the triumph,it doesn't limit the service I did to Rome.I conquered cities for Rome;I defeated near 10,000 enemies for Rome;I killed Tyrant Pyrrhus for Rome - and I accepted a triumph for me;
Does the above imply that I am not fit to rule Rome? That is up to you Senators. Though I believe,whatever many may think of me,that I am as able as any man here to be Consul and lead the Republican Legions; That I need not prove.
