Default Euro hits all time high - again, now nearing $1.5

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/2939566.stm

Ooops sorry that was the previous BBC link from 2003 (no mention of the new one yet on BBC or any newscast yet). In 2003 it was $1.1932.

    It is now $ 1.4890.

Not bad for a coin introduced at $1.1665 in 1999, reaching an all-time low in 2000 at $0.8230.

    Then *something* happened in 2001...

    Been only going up since.

I think the yanks should really get up and do something about it, it's not good for Europe either, even though it means nice cheap imports from the US (yes, I'm guilty too).

Why? What would that even mean? That the Euro had become strong, or that the US dollar had become weak? And what is the significance of measuring a currency's current strength anyway - what matters is the utility of that strength or weakness in the myriad other economic conditions prevailing at the day.

We should give up the pound now to be part of the glorious vision of the future that the EU represents as a united, hip-thrusting, world-****ing superpower in 100 years time.

no reason, i just like to annoy france and germany.

but seriously we do not gain anything from joining the euro till it is the stronger of the two currencies, so untill that happens i refuse point blank to join. that said its not as if we would lose anything from joining now, except part of our national identity

My national identity is doing just fine thank you.

There is a lot more to currencies than how 'strong' they are.

Actually it's the dollar that has been freefalling. The Euro has a fixed value.

Actually the euro is also doing well compared with China's Yuan, but less spectacularly.

Not for the euro - for European exports - they become too expensive, and same goes for tourists visiting Europe.

This should be in any way a direct result from a country getting poorer .So I don't see it as a euro problem .And if somebody becomes poorer,he'll buy less of course .Neither can we in Eu do smth about it .

Look, if I produce something and want to sell it, I'll be rather put off if my clientele is broke.

No sale = no dinero for me either. My turn to join the downward poverty cycle.

Economy eventually balances out as a whole - doesn't mean any newfound balance is comfy for each individual afterward.

In short, if my currency is too expensive, I am relatively rich, but the prospects are bleak, since I need at least SOME wealthy customers to keep me that way.

Now I could lower my prices, but then other problems arise - my costs are higher than elsewhere, and wages too. Also, they could start accusing me of dumping, which is to be avoided.

What to do, what to do. Wealth ain't easy.

Isolationism is a real pain for individuals as well as economies. You'll survive, but that's about it. Better to have many, many connections - even if you don't use them all at the same time.
