Which faction gives you the closest feeling to playing as the Romans?
I know most will say Byzantine, but frankly, I don't see it. The Kingdoms expansion made them extremely well rounded. The zweihander infantry along with flame throwers is extremely cool, but not decidedly "roman".
For me, the closest faction is Venice. Mainly because of the awesome venetian heavy infantry. Their shields resemble the Roman legionaries, and they are an incredibly hearty infantry with great offense and durability.

I would have to say Byzantium or Venice. Byzantium because they are the true heirs of the Roman Empire, and Venetians because their colour is red, and they are an Italian Faction. Both of those, obviously.

The Byzantines because of the extremely awesome Kataphractoi and Varangian Gaurd which is my favorite unit. Plus Byzantine Infantry which are cheap and a good infantry-of-the-line.

An Empire is defined as a political conglomerate that incorporates people of different culture/nationality which the HRE certainly did.
Holy was used because as the Pope was the spiritual leader of christianity the Kaiser ( Emperor ) was its worldly leader so the two of 'em where two sides of the same coin ( in theory that is, in truth they constantly bickered about whose influence should be stronger - relating to the bibel the popes felt that they should have the last word in all things ).
Roman it was because when Charlemagne was crowned in 800 it was meant to be a revival of the Western Roman Empire. In 812 the Byzantinians accepted his title as having same rank as their own Imperators.
When Otto the 1st was crowned he was deemed the sucessor of Charlemagne.
And of course to become Kaiser you had to be crowned by the Pope - in Rome ( only Napolean Bonaparte crowned himself ).

Oberhut, the Holy Roman Empire meant something during the medieval times, but by the time Voltaire said his famous sentence (neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire) in 18th century, the HRE lost all of its former glory.

Venice is the true heir of the WRE. Their citizens were Romans that escape on the isle of Rialto to avoid the barbarian invasion. Also the entire city is built with roman architecture.

Byzantium cause they have strong traditional units and crap technology. Other than them I think Milan or Venice- two Italian factions with tough infantry.

Byzantium or Eastern Roman Empire or in Greek Βασιλεία Ρωμαίων. The longest lived and survived Empire of human history. (More than one thousand years). The Empire that kept Sassanids Persians, Turks, Arabs and all the eastern nations away from Europe.

Ha, who needs to pick from one of the originals. I made the Roman Empire in my game, starting in Florence. I love seeing the world in that shade of red.

Lol, is part of that because they're always yelling out, "For the Empire!"?
But I would have to say that either Byzantium because they were the true heirs of the Roman Empire or, for some odd reason, the Sicilians remind me of the Roman Empire. Yeah I know, their Normans, but when I see them I think back to the Romans. Maybe because they seem like the ones that would get the most Roman influence over them if they were put up against Milan, Venice, and themselves. Oh well, thats my opinion.
