The weirdest thing just happened

I'd survived the mother of all sieges at Caen and I'd dismissed the screen asking if I wanted to end the battle as I wanted to mop up. Mopping up went on for ages and eventually I'm left with one red triangle in a far corner of the map, I've knocked out all the artillery so I'm wondering what's up.
Turn the speed to 6x and send some cavalry there. When they arrive, they find just one soldier, running, it seems, up against the red line. He's not going anywhere and my cavalry won't touch him. So, send them away and bring up some archers. I move the camera so I'm facing the soldier up close but all I'm getting is the red arrow icon. They won't touch him either. Same with spearmen and anything else I try to finish him.
I decide to exit the game but the only screen I get tells me I'll lose if I do. So, I'm staring at the screen, wondering what the hell to do now when out of the distance a lone knight gallops up, lances him in the back and gallops away again. Battle over.

...was the lone knight one of yours?

if so, where was the rest of his unit?

Wait, so the one remaining soldier couldn't retreat past the red border line?

And a random knight came out of nowhere and killed him?
Was the knight yours?

I don't get it, after you click continue battle you can exit and it has the same effects as saying end battle. You only lose if you exit before you rout/destroy all enemies, so after continuing you could exit and not lose. It sounds as though you're lying, but i'll assume you just said the wrong thing. So what did you mean?

I'm not lying!

I'm assuming the knight was mine as there was only me and the French on the battlefield. What amazed me so much was that the knight seemed to act of his own accord and was on his own. As I say, the whole episode was played at 6x with me bringing up various units that couldn't kill the soldier and about 30 secs pass between my last attempt and this lone knight coming out of nowhere. As soon as the soldier dies the battle statistics comes up so I can't investigate further.

I can't say for sure that the end battle screen came up, I can't really remember, I just assumed it had come up as I spent so long mopping up and wondering why the final screen hadn't shown when there was no siege equipment left.
I can say for sure that when I tried to exit, the screen said I'd lose the battle and that the knight appeared, seemingly of his own accord and on his own. I can't explain it but I was so amazed, I just had to tell someone.

I get leftover enemies all the time. You think you've chased the enemy off the map and the end screen doesn't come up. Then you go look and you see a lone soldier standing still (or constantly falling over) saying "run for your lives". Attacking it is very difficult if the rest of his unit has already exited the battlefield, my units keep running between him and the red line.

Hmmm, have been playing since the release but dotn remember anything like that happening to me - at least not after the patches being released. In early days I remember many silly things happening all the time...

Thats odd, I do this loads of times after I have been asked if I want to continue or end the battle because I can't be bothered to chase 3 units, after killing all the big ones.

I suggest Patching, Re-patching, getting rid of that mod (if using one) and reinstall.

FYI I'm patched to 1.2 and using SS 4.1.

I don't think I need to fix anything, this is not a complaint post. Units frequently get stuck somewhere, I recently had a bunch of French infantry continuously running into my castle wall under ladders and I couldn't touch them.
The point of this post was just to share my amazement at the sight of this one knight shoving his lance through a bugged solder when:
a) the soldier was in an area where the knight shouldn't have been able to get to him
b) I hadn't told him to
c) he was on his own
d) it seemed, at the time, while I was staring at the screen, wondering what to try next, this knight just thought "agh, I've had enough of this, I'll show you how it's done!"

Was the Knight in shining armour

I tend to do all the mopping up I can and never had this happen either.

I'm not saying it can't happen, sure with programs like this there is a lot involved and you only need a certain set of conditions to occur to get caught in a infinate loop.

If you can, try running the battle again. It may not happen again or you may have repeatable results. If later try letting CA know, but I don't think they are patching again for this software.

i've certainly had that "quit and you'll lose" message before, but luckily they were all in obvious places so i could run them down and finish the battle.
