I don't know anything about SPQR but I know that RTR is worth the space it takes up in gold. It doubles the map and like triples how many provices there are and adds layers of complexity and historical accuracy that one could never expect from lazy ignorent game devs like the creative assymbly.

Play RTR platinum/gold with metro/naval or Imperator, and also SPQR (trying doesn't hurt).

Then RTR VII: The Iberian Conflict releases: that'll keep you satisfied.

    Cura ut valeas.

RTW mods are like candies - every has it's own different flavour. And it depends from the person which he will like the most.

Try RTR Platinum - it's perfect start for a begginer in mods (It was my first mod )
If you want a challenge - try Imperator.
If you will enjoy Platinum you can always add some more flavour - submods like ExRM, Metro-Naval and many more.
Also "taste" a bit of SPQR, maybe it will fit your needs even more.

    Happy "tasting"!

roger. thanks. reading the FAQ, does th game simply end at 1 A.D. since the time line is from 280 BC to 1 AD? if so, what is the point of that?

With the 4tpy sub-mod (4 turns per year), you should have plenty of time to do whatever you want.

Also, warfare begins to change quite a bit in the first century AD and the units and tactics will be obsolete (in theory)...

Well, first, the phalanx almost completely disappears (even before 1AD), as well as several factions (and units).

Other factions learn a lot from the Roman warfare and start creating legionary units too (they are present in RTR, but not in the numbers you would see in the first century).

Romans start to use more and more cavalry with more efficiency, which is not portrayed in RTR.

    New weapons and armors...

    And so on...

yeah. thanks. i guess i was referring to the game not history. so does the game just shut off at 1 A.D.? is there still a civil war...even without factions??

There is no civil war and you should be able to play past that date though, in terms of victory conditions, that`s the deadline.
