So what is everyone's preferred campaign style? I try to go for a slow and steady build up to conquer a foe, but when they attack and I crush them, then a nearly empty town is to good to pass up, turning into a bit of a land grab.
Steady, dependable growth and controlled expansion.
One massive super landgrab.
One quick land grab then slow, controlled expansion
Set up economy and landgrab or 'Blitz' any and every foe from there on.

I like to use diplomacy to win without having to pay a massive upkeep bill. Also, assassins.![]()

I usually grab 1 or 2 rebel provinces in the beginning, and then I build my economy. After that I will see what diplomacy does to me and if I go to war, I usually grab 1 or 2 provinces from them and sign peace. I almost never finish them off.
Quick land grab of rebel provinces and then building up my provinces slowly. then if no one attacks me, controlled expansion in one maybe two directions a t a time.
I just try to keep good relations to my allies wich would be very few, maybe the pope and one or two others depending on what faction im playing. Take as many rebel provinces as possible, and then I wait and build up a couple of armies, develop trade, farms, religious buildings, etc. If someone attacks me and they are one of my neighbors then they aren't going to get any peace if they don't pay a lot of money. I just take their settlements one after one. If its a factions wich are way over the other side of the sea wich attacks me I might only defend myself untill I have enough money to send a big fleet and army over there, and maybe get ceasefire for them to pay a few florins if they seem to want it.

Quick land grab and then slow expansion.
I hate blitzing because it causes a massive decrease in your income.
I focus everything on economics and if a faction attacks me, I'll take one or two provinces before calling a ceasefire.
Steady expansion. Well, in the very beginning I'll jump the neighbouring factions while they're weak and after that, just halt for a while and take my time planning my next moves.
I usually take a few rebel places, build a good economy and anything else that matters (if possible) while waiting for some other country to attack me. Or in other case, as a Catholic faction I like to wait one of my neighbours to be excom'ed to get the chance of taking it down before a new Pope is elected.
Does anyone else like using the College of Cardinals as a hitlist? =P 'Preferati' just means "ME FIRST" to me. ;p Also, eliminating your enemies cardinals seems to lower thier rep with the pope, allowing you to personally punish would be land thieves.

Quite honestly for me I love playing defensively. I hate always having to be on the offense on the AI because they never attack me with an army that ... maybe I could beat but it'd be a close battle. It's either I'll lose or I'll win.
What I really like about the expansion though is it gives you more of that. More smaller settlements, give you that more accurate feeling of being at war with one country for an extended period of time. I dont think back then you grew to a certain power and then everyone ganged up on you. You generally went to war with only one person.
So I would consider revising![]()
The pleasure about a dream is that it's a fantasy. If it ever came real then it wasn't a dream.
When playing as Byzantines i like to a gather a quick legion from all my provinces and and rush to sofia this is a great province to train miliary which will head for the hungary faction as i always seem to be at war with, while this going on capture as many provinces as i can from the turks they always give me trouble early on. I from here place a few legions on a ship and head towards Rome and Naples this are easy picking at the start of the game using my horse achers and exterminate the cities bring them back under roman control i then hold my new latin empire for a good few turns let the catholics wear each other down.
Playing as England, I only ever blitzed to unite the British isles. Once everything was under control, I did slow, steady and purposeful expansion, choosing my enemies wisely.
Although, my campaign worked out nicely and I didn't really need an excuse to crush France and make them my beatch.
Edit: i speel gud

I often try to be steady, expanding the economy, then attacking, but if the opportunity to cripple a potential superpower/enemy, I change the focus to army and then the economy. Obviously I make some adjusts depending of the current situation.
I chose "One massive super landgrab." because when I play I like to start out with a bang and begin expanding through rebel lands and weak neighbors. Through this expansion I more then often come into contact with others, war is declared, and my expansion pretty much continues.
My favorite isn't listed there. I like to start wars with all my neighbors and frantically try to fend off their simultaneous onslaught... especially if one of those neighbors is the Mongols or Timurids. It's fun.
Using 1tpy system it gives me about 400 turns in all, so I basically slowly playing enlarging my empire 10-15 prvinces each century until the end of the game.
Last campaign I had victory with England around 1450 but will continue later until I reach America.

Depends greatly on what faction and what difficulty settings I play on.
Most of the time i go for quick expansion for about 20-25 turns then turtle for a while and see what happens in the diplomacy side of things. From there I go with the flow, if theres a nice opportunity for expansion take it, if not then wait a while or stir up a bit of agro on one of my borders...
Current byzantine campaign is one of the most fun ive had, did the same as above, been at war with venice and hungary for ages but just held the line there while i took turkey out and allied with egypt. Turkey is dead now and the mongols came in at baghdad and have taken 5 of egypts provinces. It saves me getting bad relations by attacking egypt as i can just "liberate" the mongol held lands (when i can get stong enough armies to beat them)
However in a nice twist the pope just called a crusade on jerusalem the mongol capital so it looks like a lot of my work will be done for me
So its turtle and expand slowly until the mogol threat is under control, also thinking of edging into hungary
Hit them as hard as you can, as fast as you can, where its going to hurt them the most..... and preferably when theyre not looking!
Playing as the Byzantines as always, I build my economy first and capture just in the Trebizond, Crimea, Morea, Epirus, Aegean and regions and perhaps Smyrna. Then I stay there, go to war with Venice. Keep Hungary and the Turks happy. Build my economy. Constantinople can get as much as 18k if you play Byz correctly. By turn 70 I will then have a stable country and probably captured Crete. Then I can move onto Ragusa then by that time, Hungary or HRE would probably captured Zagreb already but if not, move up the Adriatic and surprise the Venetians by having a full stack with a siege engine with it and just sack Venice, destroy all buildings then if the situation in Italy is unstable, leave it. When it rebels, attack again, now masscre everyone... then leave permanantly...lol Last time I did this I "screwed" Venice 2 times (oh ya a one night stand) and the 15 or 20 turns later when I reconquered Venice from the broken hearted Venetians who were totally destroyed Venice was only making 230 per turn and it was their only city.
I prefer really slow game...sometimes It's getting boring but I get brilliant economy and can have giant armies...
