OK, here it is in a nice neat package...
If you're trying to get SS to run on the Steam version of kingdoms, you need to do the following:
1. Using a text editor, open a new file.
2. Copy the following and paste into the file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Mods\Unofficial\0001Stainless_Steel]
"Author"="King Kong"
"ConfigFile"="Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg"
"DisplayName"="Stainless Steel"
"FullName"="Stainless Steel"
"GameExe"="kingdoms.exe"
"Language"="English"
"Path"="mods/Stainless_Steel"
"Version"="5.1"
3. Save the file as "SS for Steam.reg" to the desktop or some other place you can find it easily.
4. Double-click the "SS for Steam" registry file. This will add the proper key to the registry.
5. From the Steam Games panel, right-click Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms, and select Properties, then select Launch Options. Ensure that this field is blank.
6. From the Steam Games panel, double click Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms the start the M2TW Launcher.
7. Click Play on the launcher, and you should see Stainless Steel listed as an option. Select and enjoy!
Kudos to Dingler and Sepiche for finding this!

I'm ready to admit defeat on this issue - I just can't get SS to work with the Steam version of Kingdoms. I've searched forums both here and in the .org and I just can't get this thing to work!
Here's some key specs:
Athlon 5600+
2GB RAM
nVidia 8800GTS 320
150GB free disk space
Vista 32bit Home Premium
Here's what I have done:
- Clean install of M2TW from Steam
- Clean install of Kingdoms from Steam
- Installed SS 5.0 from FileFront to /Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/medieval ii total war/. This installs the SS files into the Mods directory of the above.
- Installed SS 5.1B from Filefront in the same way.
- added "@mods\Stainless_Steel\Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg" (without quotes) to the launch options for Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms
Launching from Steam loads the M2 launcher. Clicking "Play" displays the 4 Kingdoms mods and Medieval II Total War in a sub-menu
After clicking the "Medieval 2 Total War" option, the system briefly (VERY briefly) displays the SS Loading splash screen, then I CTD with the following error message: "Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."
I have tried the registry hack suggested elsewhere; this adds a Stainless Steel launch option to the sub-menu but does not change the result.
Interestingly, LTC installs perfectly and runs fine.
Has ANYBODY been able to get SS running with Steam?
