    Icon5 A definitive Stainless Steel with Steam Answer?

    OK, here it is in a nice neat package...

    If you're trying to get SS to run on the Steam version of kingdoms, you need to do the following:

    1. Using a text editor, open a new file.
    2. Copy the following and paste into the file:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Mods\Unofficial\0001Stainless_Steel]
    "Author"="King Kong"
    "ConfigFile"="Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg"
    "DisplayName"="Stainless Steel"
    "FullName"="Stainless Steel"
    "GameExe"="kingdoms.exe"
    "Language"="English"
    "Path"="mods/Stainless_Steel"
    "Version"="5.1"

    3. Save the file as "SS for Steam.reg" to the desktop or some other place you can find it easily.
    4. Double-click the "SS for Steam" registry file. This will add the proper key to the registry.
    5. From the Steam Games panel, right-click Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms, and select Properties, then select Launch Options. Ensure that this field is blank.
    6. From the Steam Games panel, double click Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms the start the M2TW Launcher.
    7. Click Play on the launcher, and you should see Stainless Steel listed as an option. Select and enjoy!

    Kudos to Dingler and Sepiche for finding this!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I'm ready to admit defeat on this issue - I just can't get SS to work with the Steam version of Kingdoms. I've searched forums both here and in the .org and I just can't get this thing to work!
    Here's some key specs:
    Athlon 5600+
    2GB RAM
    nVidia 8800GTS 320
    150GB free disk space
    Vista 32bit Home Premium
    Here's what I have done:
    - Clean install of M2TW from Steam
    - Clean install of Kingdoms from Steam
    - Installed SS 5.0 from FileFront to /Program Files/Steam/Steamapps/Common/medieval ii total war/. This installs the SS files into the Mods directory of the above.
    - Installed SS 5.1B from Filefront in the same way.
    - added "@mods\Stainless_Steel\Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg" (without quotes) to the launch options for Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms
    Launching from Steam loads the M2 launcher. Clicking "Play" displays the 4 Kingdoms mods and Medieval II Total War in a sub-menu
    After clicking the "Medieval 2 Total War" option, the system briefly (VERY briefly) displays the SS Loading splash screen, then I CTD with the following error message: "Medieval 2: Total War encountered an unspecified error and will now exit."
    I have tried the registry hack suggested elsewhere; this adds a Stainless Steel launch option to the sub-menu but does not change the result.
    Interestingly, LTC installs perfectly and runs fine.
    Has ANYBODY been able to get SS running with Steam?
    (not on topic but still curious)
    So LTC works fine with Steam? Do you get a Lands to Conquer option on the list of things to launch on the Launcher?
    Yep, works perfectly. There's apparently something in your installer that's missing in KK's.
    hmmmm, now I'm beginning to think something is wrong with the FileFron version of SS. System.log notes the following after I unsuccessfully try to start SS from the launcher:
    Wow... a quick check confirms that these files are indeed missing. I'll try downloading from a different location and see if that helps.
    Yep, works perfectly.
    Wonderful to know, wasn't sure whether my installer would do things properly with Steam.
    so, am I drawing the proper inference then, that LTC 4.1 works seamlessly with Steam, and that there is nothing more affirmative that the gamer need do, except fire up the game by clicking the icon?? :hmmm:
    if so, wOOt!!
    Apparently so as for wasaaabi it worked fine for him just running the installer.
    And remember you will need to run Lands to Conquer from the Medieval II Launcher.
    Dont you just change launch options on the game within steam to @Stainless_Steel_Mod.cfg? Thats what I do and it works fine.
    The plot thickens. Apparently the only place to download SS is from Filefront. Anybody know of alternate locations?
    I'm on a mission!
    Still trying to slay this dragon ...
    The problem appears to lie in descr_projectiles.txt, in the Kingdoms-specific weapons section. Just guessing, but I think it has something to do with the mangonel configuration, specifically with the grapeshot type.
    I'm not sufficiently gifted to decode exactly what the problem is, but I think I'm close.
    I'm beginning to wonder if the Steam version of Kingdoms is missing some files? I tried setting up a custom battle with all possible types of artillery and none of the guns had the ability to fire grape.
    By the way, this file also mentions the mini, regular and super-banana projectile types. The idea of firing a load of nanners from a monster bombard sounds pretty cool...
    KK, any ideas?
    Search for a thread called steam! it details the solution. I had the same problem. It doesnt have the registry key.
    OK, I've tried adding the registry key, as follows:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Mods\Unofficial\0001Stainless_Steel]
    "Author"="King Kong"
    "ConfigFile"="Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg"
    "DisplayName"="Stainless Steel"
    "FullName"="Stainless Steel"
    "GameExe"="kingdoms.exe"
    "Language"="English"
    "Path"="mods/Stainless Steel"
    "Version"="5.1"
    This effectively adds a Stainless Steel option to the launcher sub-menu, but selecting it gives an immediate fatal error.
    Still searching for ideas...:hmmm:
    Thank you VERY much for this, my campaign still won't load for me so I'm working on a few things, but I can at least play custom battles and get into the menu.
    I'm going to be off the air for the Holidays, but I'd be happy to see if we can get this running for you when I get back Monday. In the meatime, can you describe the error you're getting with the campaign?
    OK, I got this working for Steam users. Follow the steps of the OP, but instead copy and paste this:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\Mods\Unofficial\0001Stainless_Steel]
    "Author"="King Kong"
    "ConfigFile"="Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg"
    "DisplayName"="Stainless Steel"
    "FullName"="Stainless Steel"
    "GameExe"="kingdoms.exe"
    "Language"="English"
    "Path"="mods/Stainless_Steel_6"
    "Version"="6.0"
    into your blank file. Make sure you leave the launch options blank.
    Apparently there is another solution that does not require modifying the registry(?):
