Default Rome DVD's Best & Worst

Being a keen collector and watcher of all films from this era I thought it might be fun to start a thread on your favourite (and worst) films, TV Programmes and DVD's from from the Rome era

    2 I can recommend are
Murder in Rome (BBC) Court room style drama about Cicero's most famous case
Hannibal Rome's worst nightmare (BBC) awesome drama/documentary about the life and times of Carthage's greatest general
Could do with more battle scenes but still top notch

And the worst anything from the History of Warfare series

    I got these from ebay

    T.V DRAMA
    - Seasons 1 and 2 of "Rome" (an HBO original)
    - "I, Claudius" (BBC) (the price has dropped tremendously for this DVD set)
    - "Masada" (one of the best mini-series I've ever seen)

    CINEMA
    - "Gladiator" (for sheer entertainment)
    - "Spartacus" (starring Kirk Douglas)
    - "Ben Hur" (Charlton Heston)
    - "Fall of the Roman Empire" (it's hard to find this one in the US)

    T.V Documentaries
    - "Rome: Engineering an Empire" (History Channel)
    - "Warrior Queen Boudica" (History Channel)
    - "Roman War Machine" (I think it was History Channel)

To Barbarian Prince's list I would add:

Cleopatra ( Rex Harrison, Liz Taylor, Richard Burton)
(If you can find it D.W. Griffiths 1912 movie it is a hoot)

The new boxed set of I, Claudius also has an early 60's documentary on the 1930's movie version staring Charles Laughton. The documentary is called the greatest movie never made.

I totally forgot about "Cleopatra" (the one starring Elizabeth Taylor). They don't make movies like that anymore!

Barbarian Prince Agree with all I just bought a 3 DVD set fron UK ebay (Gladiator,Spartacus & Fall of the Roman Empire) SUPERB
Would add "Ancient Rome the rise and fall of an empire" (BBC)
There was a Timewatch series which had Augustus (octavian) Gladiators and Gengis Khan but the only copies I found are very low quality and copied off the History channel

The History Channel also did a good show on Hannibal. Anybody that gets elephants across the Alps in November gets my vote. Hannibal ad portas!

Many times I wish the History Channel would do more History and less Modern Marvels.
